I met Cyril on the way down from Senegal where we had an encounter with the police at the border with Gambia. A young girl in our taxi was caught with a small bottle of skin whitener, which is illegal in the Gambia. She was a Senegalese girl going to work at a small hair salon in Serrakunda and had been told to give the bottle to the owner. I for one gave her the benefit of the doubt but the border guards arrested her. The penalty would be very severe for this offence, even jail if she did not pay a large fine. I eventually bribed the border guards with 200 Dalasi to let her go and we continued on our way .
