kololi

Kololi Tavern is situated in Kololi district just outside the Gambia's second largest town Serrakunda. Kololi Tavern was built by Paul Jallow and two friends, Charles Jarra and Baba Sillah. Built from local sustainable materials, it is provisioned by local farmers and fishermen with locally produced food. Guests have the opportunity of integrating with local people and learning about the culture. The Tavern is built in a semi traditional "Fula" style of hut. These round grass roofed structures are comfortable and cool. They comprise double bed, toilet and shower. The setting is located within a compound of trees and vegetation that gives both an amount of privacy and cool shelter from the sun. For those wishing to cater for themselves by buying at the local market and cooking their own food there is a small kitchen available.

However, the monopoly of tourist developments by the big foreign companies with access to technology lavish funding and expertise can prevent the smaller African ventures from finding customers. In competition with these large translational companies these smaller ventures can find it extremely difficult to survive. However, because of the unique nature of the "African style" of living and accommodation most manage to struggle by .They tend to attract the sort of people who do not wish to stay in the large Western "Pseudo - African" style tourist ventures. Some of these massive and impersonal hotels could well be located in the heart of London or Paris, until you take a look out of a window and see a "small part of Africa" Africa is a Blitzkrieg on the senses, so why limit yourself to a small raiding party !

The Tavern is friendly and down to earth and can cater to most of your needs whether it be advice on activities or arranging "Safaris" ( not the big white hunter type ) but overland trips to and through the amazing Casamance region of Senegal. Prices are around £10 per night with breakfast included. Trips can also be arranged to suit personnel taste. The only limit is yourself.

Paul Jallow now has another venture in partnership with a friend, Jan Vercammen. The Paradise Inn is located on the edge of Tanji nature park at the village of Tanji. For a comprehensive look at Paradise Inn and what it offers go to the Website : Paradise Inn Tanji Other information on the Gambia can be found at any of the Gambia links below.

If we go to another mans yard we should show him some respect. We should not just whoop it up, disrespect his home and then disappear. Take your time and appreciate Africa and it's people, Spend your money where it will benefit the people and not the already rich Multi-National companies.
