Important Places in Middle Earth
(after the destruction of Numenor)
Angmar: The Witch-realm in the North, once ruled by the Lord of the Nazgūl, chief servant of the Dark Lord.
Anduin: The Great River, in which the one ring was lost when Isildur was shot while trying to escape from the orcs with the ring. The fellowship passed down Anduin by boat from Lothlorien to Parth Galen, at which point the fellowship was split.
Barad-Dūr: The Dark Tower, residence of Sauron, the mighty forest in the Land of Mordor, built on a pinnacle of the Ered Lithuin (Ash Mountains).
Barrow Downs: Here the four hobbits were drawn into the burial chamber of a Barrow-wight, from which they were saved by Tom Bombadil.
Bree: A small town outside the Shire populated by both Hobbits and Men. Here Frodo and company stayed for the night at the Prancing Pony, where they received news of Gandalf and met the mysterious Strider (Aragorn).
Buckland: The area of the Shire that Frodo lived in before being adopted by Bilbo. Meriadoc was later to become the Master of Buckland.
Carrock: A rock in the northern part of the river Anduin. Near this rock lied the house of Beorn, who assisted Gandalf, Bilbo and the Dwarves on their journey to Erebor (The Lonely Mountain).
Dead Marshes: Fenland to the west of the ancient site of the Battle of Dagorland. Gollum led Frodo and Sam through these treacherous marshes, where the bodies of the battle dead lay murkily below the surface with eerie corpse candles.
Dimrill Dale: The valley where the fellowship finds itself after escaping the horror of the Mines of Moria. Within the Dale lay the lake of Mirrormere (Kheled-zāram) from which springs the river Silverlode which passed through Lothlorien.
Dol Amroth: The coastal citadel which was the home to the Prince Imrahil.
Dol Guldur: A former fortress of Sauron in souther Mirkwood. Sauron fled from here to Mordor when forced to retreat by the White Council. It remained a stronghold of evil until the end of the War of the Ring, when it was destroyed by the Lady Galadriel of Lothlorien.
Dunharrow: Refuge of the people of Rohan, in the mountains south west of Edoras. From here is the only enterance to the Paths of the Dead.
Edoras: The city of Rohan, where in the Golden Hall, Meduseld, sat King Theoden, Lord of the Mark. Here Gandalf made the King aware of the danger from not only Sauron, but of Saruman in Isengard and of the treachery of the King's own counsellor, Grima Wormtongue. Here was Aragorn first introduced to the King, and a great friendship grew between them.
Emyn Muil: A rocky area surrounding Nen Hithoel, the lake above the Falls of Rauros. After the breaking of the fellowship sam and Frodo passed through the Emyn Muil to the Dead Marshes.
Erebor: The Lonely Mountain, the kingdom of the dwarves restored with the help of Bilbo, and the death of Smaug. It was here that the Battle of the Five Armies was fought.
Erech: The hill upon which Aragorn first displayed the banner prepared for him by Arwen, and where he gathered the Oathbreakers, the army of the Dead, before attacking the fleet at the Pelagrir.
Esgaroth: Also known as Lake Town, as it was built on the Long Lake. Bilbo and the Dwarves were carried down the river to this town, once they escaped the Elven Kings palace.
Fangorn: The ancient forest of the ents, where Merry and Pippin fled to from the orcs and the Riders of Rohan. Here they encountered Treebeard, chief of the ents. They brought tidings to him of Saruman and Isengard which caused the ents to form an army and destroy Isengard.
Field of Celebrant: The site of an ancient battle between men of the West and Easterlings owing allegiance to Sauron.
Ford of Bruinen: A crossing in the River Loudwater, where Frodo was pursued by the nine nazgul in his flight to Rivendell.
Gondor: The Southern Kingdom of Middle-Earth, founded in the Second Age by the Dśnedain, after the destruction of Numenor.
Grey Havens: Harbour on the Firth of :Lhūn from which the ring bearers (of the master ring and the three elven rings: Frodo, Bilbo, Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel) and the household of Elrond.
