John's first film for the Warner Bros studio was Beau Brummel, co-starring Mary Astor. The film was so successful that after a brief visit to London for a repeat success in HAMLET, he was signed for a handsome 3 year contract at $ 76,250 per film, each film to be completed in six weeks. For every week over, an extra $ 6,625 would be paid. His contract also stipulated that he was to have leading lady approval, a four roomed suite at the Ambassador Hotel, a chauffeur driven limousine and all meals paid for by the studio.
