September 4th - Terry is "The Master"

Superb news from Terry Course last night.

In the European Masters Games 2008, held in Malmo in southern Sweden, he won the Bronze Medal in his division.  He gives the details in an email reproduced below.

" On the 26 August I flew to Malmo in southern Sweden to compete in the Archery competition of the above games. After a FITA 70 metre round, elimination round and medal matches shot over 4 days I managed to secure a bronze medal by coming 3rd in the finals. The field in my division consisted of 29 archers from 11 different countries".

3rd June - Congratulations to Mike Karaphiledes

Tony Brown sent me the following brief message yesterday. It is great news for Mike and indicates a great deal of persistence and determination on his part - well done indeed.

4 years ago at the Wrest Park Craft Fair in Silsoe Mike Karaphiledes turned up at the Clophill Archery Club “have-a-go” stall to try his luck at archery. Today, it has been confirmed he is going the Paralympics in Beijing.

Given that we have our own representative at the games you may care to note that the official website there has just gone live at the following address - http://en.beijing2008.cn/

21st May - New General Secretary for SCAS

A letter received today from Dr Steve Ellison brings the good news that Andy Woodger of the Laleham Club has been appointed General Secretary of Southern Counties Archery Society in succession to Brian Purnell.  Andy will be well known to many of you as both a coach and a judge.  He is taking on a big job and will need our support.  I have already written to offer my congratulations.

22nd February - Message from Stan Seymour

I had an email from Stan Seymour earlier today, saying that he expects to be back in the shop full time from the beginning of March.  He also asked me to pass on his thanks to all the many people who were willing him to get better. He says it was the best tonic he could have had.

It is really good to hear that you are so much better Stan - we have missed you.

6th December 2007 - Guy Ely

Geoff Barham tells me that Marjorie Ely has said that she doesn't want a lot of flowers and would prefer a donation to the Parkinson's Charity as one of their daughters has Parkinson's Disease.

You can make a donation on line at http://www.parkinsons.org.uk/ marking it in memory of Guy Ely

or send it to either, Geoff Barham at 19 High Street, Moulton, Spalding, PE12 6QB or Mrs M. Ely, 68 Hillside Avenue, Borehamwood, Herts, WD6 1HL.

5th December 2007 - Guy Ely

I understand that Guy Ely’s funeral will be held on Monday 17th December at 11.20 am in the North Chapel, West Herts Crematorium, High Elms Lane, Garston, Watford, Hertfordshire, WD25 0JS.

3rd December 2007 - I have heard from both the Coaching Organisation and the SCAS Judges Committee the sad news of the death of "Guy" Ely.

Lots of people in the County will have been trained by "Guy" either as coaches or as judges.  He has been around for as long as I can remember and was given Emeritus status some time ago in both coaching and judging.

Guy made an enormous contribution to the development of the sport in earlier days and will be missed by his many, many friends.

I will post any further information as it becomes available,

15th October 2007 - Enid Johnson

Rebecca Boyd has forwarded the following information about the funeral service etc for Enid.  It would help Rebecca if those intending to avail themselves of the buffet could please let me know. You can email me at the address at the head of this page or telephone 01525-404514.

"11-30am on Thurs 18th Oct at Saint George of England  Church in Toddington, Beds (on the green) for a Remembrance service for Enid, followed by a buffet in the Red Lion Public House on the opposite side of the green. All walking distance.

Enid will be driven to:  All Saints Church, Theydon Garnon, Coopersale Lane, Essex. Where the burial will take place.  This is where Enid mainly spent the last 2years intermingled with visits home to Gerry. Enid's daughter Rebecca lives there and was married in the Church.

Everybody is more than welcome to attend the Epping side of things but this is certainly not expected. Close family will have to leave The Red Lion after an hour to attend this as there is a time frame, but this does not affect the Toddington arrangements as we hope many of you may take time to reminisce and catch up".

12th October 2007 - Enid Johnson

I spoke this evening to Enid's daughter, Rebecca Boyd, who is making the arrangements for the funeral service and I have most of the details clear.

The service is at 11:30 a.m. on October 18th at the Toddington Parish Church of St George of England. We are invited to join Enid's family afterwards at the Red Lion, Toddington, which is a short walk from the church.

The interment will be in Epping at a church close to the home of Enid's daughter and Rebecca has asked me to make it clear that she is not expecting Bedfordshire mourners to travel to Epping though they are entirely welcome to do so if they wish.

There is no dedicated car parking at the church in Toddington.  There are some "two-hour" spaces on the parade of shops opposite and other places in the surrounding streets.

8th October 2007 - Enid Johnson

I had a very sad message today from Gerry Johnson, who called to say that Enid has died following a long and very difficult illness. I did what I could to pass on condolences to Gerry but it was pretty inadequate.  I know something of the physical difficulties that they have gone through together in recent years and how much they cherished and cared for each other, so it is hard to get a measure of Gerry's distress. I could really only offer him our support and sympathy. He has family and friends around him, but it must be very, very difficult.

Enid has been our President for some time and before that was Chairman of the County Committee. Her contribution to the growth and development of the County Association was enormous and I know that she was tireless at club level and within the Regional organisation.

She was both a coach and a judge and I know of no-one more willing than she to offer help and assistance to all who needed it, indeed I was lucky to be present on two occasions when she was honoured by the Sports Council for her work.

She was a good and true personal friend and I shall miss her greatly.  I know that there are many others in archery community who will have equally good reason to say the same.

I understand from Gerry that there is to be a post-mortem and that he is not therefore able yet to describe the funeral arrangements. I will add the details once they are known.
