It’s funny how sometimes random things happen. Our Christmas 2004 tour was just like that. Read on and we’ll explain why…

Friday, December 17

Having arrived the night before, this was our first chance to visit the attractions of Atlanta. First stop CNN, for a tour of their television headquarters. At the end of the tour, you find yourself in a big foyer with shops and food outlets. We wandered over to the bookshop. It was nearly midday…

RANDOM EVENT NO. 1 - Thomas ‘Hollywood’ Henderson was going to be signing copies of his new book at 12 noon

Henderson is a former Dallas Cowboys linebacker, a first round draft pick, who played in three Superbowls including the win over Denver in Superbowl XII. He was voted to the Pro Bowl in 1977. He battled with addiction in the early 1980s, and has written his story, In Control, to help and inspire others. Henderson was a great guy, and Mumsy even got to try on his Superbowl ring. You can order a copy of Thomas’ book at HollywoodHenderson.com.

Which guy is the linebacker?

We spent the afternoon touring the Georgia Dome. We were shown around the dome, from where the defensive co-ordinator sits at the top of the stands, to the press level, the executive boxes and finally onto the field. Standing at centre field was pretty special.

Lou does her best cheerleader pose at midfield in the Georgia Dome.

That evening, it was off to see the Atlanta Hawks take on the Portland Trailblazers in out first ever attendance at an NBA game. We’d only bought $10 seats up in the nosebleed section, but when we got up there, we found cheeries chatting to fans and giving out T-shirts. When we asked how to get one, they asked if we’d like to sit downstairs. Duh! So we got a $55 upgrade on our seats and a free T-shirt. Bargain!

When there's no Ravens around, a Hawk will have to do!

Celebrities are common sights at NBA games, but at Portland @ Atlanta (especially with Atlanta’s abysmal 4-18 record)…?

RANDOM EVENT NO. 2 - Bow Wow and Nelly were sitting courtside

A guy sitting near us had already seen Bow Wow and asked to get a closer look through Ian’s camera. He’d also been at the Hawks’ home opener. But we didn’t know about Nelly until half time when he was shown on the big screen. Random!

Nelly enjoys the game.

Bow Wow - probably not wowed by the Hawks' performance.

The final score was Portland Trailblazers 100 – 84 Atlanta Hawks. The game report is here.
