SENIOR POSTS:

CURRENT

Current 17.9.2006 – Date

Senior Consultant Endocrinologist, Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Abu Dhabi, UAE

I have been in post for nearly 1 year. I have joined 2 other senior endocrinologists. The services are focused at delivering high quality outpatients endocrine and diabetes services and high quality endocrine and diabetic consultations for inpatients under other specialities. I have 6 OPD clinics per week (4 endocrine clinics and 2 diabetic clinics) and 1:3 on call for the specialty.

During this period, I have contributed to the senior support of the departments (sharing the work equally with the two other senior consultants). My appointment helped reduced the waiting time to just around 2 weeks in addition to an increased to accommodate more urgent referrals.  In addition, I took on the role of coordinating the academic activities in the department. Examples include organizing the Departmental Weekly Multidisciplinary Meeting, World Diabetes Day Symposium 2006, Diabetes in the Real World 2007 for family physicians, Management of Chronic Medical Conditions during Ramadan.  In addition, I have served on the Scientific Committee of the SKMC Medicine Update 2007 (I indeed drafted the first version of the programme and proposed the idea of two land mark lectures). I have also served as the chair of the Scientific Committee for the Fifth Libyan Diabetes and Endocrinology Conference, secured it approval from the RCP London for 18 months. I have been also invited to serve on the Clinical Management Quality Committee and to undertake coordinating the Mortality and Morbidity Reporting and Meetings from October 2007 onwards.

1.5.1996-25.8.2006

Consultant Physician in General Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology and Unit Training Director for Medicine

Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow, Essex.

·      I initially started this job as a locum for 4 months (May to August, 1996) during which I was appointed to the substantive post on the 26.July 1996.

·      This is a full-time NHS post.  The fixed sessions include 2 ward rounds and 4 OPD clinics together with acute medical on call rota of 1:6 for the first 4 years, now 1:12. One of the OPD clinics is a medical/endocrine and the other three are diabetic clinics (on three different sites to meet the geographical needs of the district).

·      The medical/diabetic firm consists of four junior doctors (a Diabetes Specialist Registrar on North Thames Rotation,  Staff Grade Doctor, a medical SHO on our 24  month rotation and a pre-registration House Physician), three Diabetes Specialist Nurses and a part time Diabetes Link Midwife,  and two Clinical Assisstant sessions in Diabetes Care.

·      The diabetic care is delivered via the conventional diabetic clinics and by the three nurses following patients up in the community. A new Diabetes Education Centre is used for educational sessions, walk-in services and to see “out of clinic” consultations for urgent and high risk patients.  All OPD diabetic clinic sessions are supported by dietary advise and chiropody services.

·      There is a close cooperation with the local medical opthalmology unit (Miss Dierdre Flaye), and the vascular surgeon (Mr Refson). I have Combined Thyroid Clinic (1st Friday of the month) with the local thyroid surgeon (Miss Jenkins) and a Diabetic Ante-natal Clinic (Jointly with Mr Hartwell). I have established a close working relationship with Professor John P. Monson (Saint Bartholomew’s Hospital) for tertiary endocrine referrals and the Renal physicians in the surrounding hospitals for joint management of diabetic renal disease.

·      During this appointment I had been the Clinical Audit Lead and I ran an effective wel attended programme. For three years. (1.1.1997-31.12.1999).

·     I was the Unit Traing Director/Royal College Tutor (1.12003 - 8.9.2006). I run an active educational programme catering for the needs of the SHO’s preparing for the MRCP and other juniors.

I am very keen on continuing education. I regularly lecture and lead workshops for GP and Practice Nurses in the locality and the region in addition to my commitments to teaching of medical students and Junior Doctors in Hospital
