Grant Anderson's historical review and introduction to the CDB's

An Introduction To The Capital Dark Blues Supporters Club

The Capital Dark Blues were founded in 1980 with a small gathering of around 10 dyed in the wool exiled Dundonians who had come to Edinburgh for work purposes. The inaugural meeting was in a tiny bar on Leith Walk owned by the late Erich Schaedler - a Dundee great, who extended great hospitality to this enthusiastic group.

With Erich's support and the fans love of DFC this small band hired mini-buses to attend games home and away through what were on the whole lean years for the Dark Blues. Trips to Dumbarton on New Year's day ending in defeat, punctures half-way to Paisley and many Derby losses were the footballing memories of these early years!

The venue then moved to Bert's Bar, William Street, Edinburgh and the meetings were held at 8pm on the last Thursday of each month - the back room was our clubhouse where you would find autographed DFC shirts on the wall from Craig Brown and Claudio Caniggia.

Still, the Andersons, Cooks, Schopplers, Gollans, Malones and Clares of these trips were keen enough to keep going and enjoy the social aspect as well. Fund-raising dances were organised and the CDBs have consistently managed to sponsor the Dees throughout the last 21 years through ball and shirt sponsorship, culminating in season 2001/02 with the sponsorship of a club-car for Fabian Caballero emblazoned with the CDBs name - surely a first for any supporters club in Scotland.

The years have seen functions attended by Donald McKay, Archie Knox, Jocky Scott, Jim Duffy, Simon Stainrod, Ron Dixon, John McCormack and the Bonetti Brothers. Countless players have also attended functions with the last three years seeing the now-legendary CDBs annual dinner becoming an essential date in all Dees diaries. Guests have included Craig Brown, Ian Ure, Terry Christie, Patrick Barclay and Tommy Gemmell.

The last 21 years have seen the club grow and with a city booming as Edinburgh is, and job opportunities more available, coupled with a large student population we feel further growth in our supporter's club is inevitable.

Anyone wishing to join is welcome to complete the membership form on this site and post it in to Neil Wallace (details on form), or join us at our monthly meetings held on the last Thurday of each month at 8pm in the "Canon’s Gait", on the High Street (or Royal Mile for those new to the town). The pub is quite near the bottom of the Mile, beyond Jeffrey Street.

As well as being a decent size upstairs for our normal meetings, there is also a large function room downstairs complete with PA system etc for any meetings with guests or other events so we no longer have to move from place to place depending on the occasion.

It is exciting times for DFC so please join us and enjoy good football, a great bunch of lads and lasses and some memorable social events! We have around 50 paid-up members and around another 50 floaters who we would like to see officially join.

Remember - Dees for Life!
