DSA Player Of The year Dinner

I felt it was high time that the Editor of "Boab's little Piece Of Scotland" finally got along to this annual event so finally managed to acquire one of the coveted places at the last minute.

The unfortunate table still never knew who they were getting in their midst, but the drink soon broke down any nervousness of meeting new faces. After all we all had one thing very much in common and that is the Team we love Dundee FC Scottish Cup Finalists of 2003.

It turned out I was to be reunited with some old friends from the Dundee Social Club.

As the proceedings progressed the team members were then welcomed into the room to a tumultuous welcome from all the fans present.

Many had come from all over the Country from The Highlands, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Forfar as well as the affiliated Clubs within the City itself. There were even members from the NADSC present, but not in an official capacity.

Also included in the numbers were some representatives from the various Unofficial websites also.

Before the meals the players were more than willing to give all that were there, their time to pose for pictures and sign autographs and there were plenty of eager fans just bursting at the bit to get the Scottish Cup heroes autographs plus pictures taken with their heroes.

Georgi and Zura

Jonay Beto and Julian

Is Georgi holding onto Zura to stop him leaving the club? We can only but hope, what ever Zura decides he certainly knew by the end of the evening how much the fans appreciated his contributions this year though he did have his head in his hands later in the proceedings when the Bloopers of the seasons were shown. A certain well hit pass back to Julian at Parkhead was well saved, to save Zura the blushes which Julian was later to experience himself.

The three amigo's were having a great time also, Beto was full of fun all night and I won't say where my pen almost ended up during the autograph sessions but it almost lit up where the sun don't shine with Nacho.

Zura deep in thought

Steven Robb and Barry Forbes

Zura looks in a very pensive mood, is he reconsidering his future at Dens after the reception he was given, what ever we still have plenty other young talent ready to come into the team with the likes of our bright future prospects Steven Robb and Barry Forbes.

After the autograph session the MC for the evening and Local Doctor Tom Dymock took charge with the help of the Dundee great Doug Cowie. Tom was the Dundee Club Doctor for 7 years, from Archie Knox's days until Ron Dixon arrived. George Knight the President of the DSA started by thanking all the other affiliated clubs with their assistance in organising the event and congratulated Jim Duffy in taking the Dee to their first Scottish Cup final in nearly 40 years and hoped that all the Duffy doubters were now eating humble pie.

Jim Duffy then took to the stage to address the fans. His main message to all present was that Dundee were not just going to the Scottish Cup to turn up. They were going to win it. This received a large cheer of approval and Jim summed up his speech by re-iterating Jimmy Marr's quote of "Never forget that it's you the fans who are the most important people at this club. Players, managers, directors and even chairmen come and go-but a club is nothing without its loyal supporters."

It was after this that Jim Duffy got a standing ovation before the main event of the evening could take place the actual handing out of the various Trophies.

Obviously I couldn't hope to be able to have every prize pictured but the following is a small sample of those that were awarded.

Zura receives the Highland Dark Blues Young Player Of the Year Award

Fabian collects the Highland Dark Blues Player Of the Year Award

During the awards there was the occasional interlude to show Video footage of the Goals of the Season and the Bloopers of the Season.  Fabian won Goal of the Season with his fantastic 2nd strike against Rangers at Dens in the 2-2 draw.  Blooper of the Season was shared between Julian Speroni and Dave MacKay for the own goal the contrived between them in the Local Derby draw at Tannadice.

Gavin took some ribbing after his mis-kick against Kilmarnock to cries of "You're no very good, you're no very good".

After the fun it was time for the Auction and an Autographed New home strip was bought for £750 by Garry Joiner from Aberdeen.  Sure to become a collectors piece when Dundee win the Scottish Cup.

This was followed by the Raffle with numerous amounts of Dundee memorabilia up for grabs.  As can be seen the Highland Dark Blues won their fair share of the prizes and were only to proud to have their picture taking with both their prizes and Jim Duffy.
