This map of Scotland concerns Somerled 'Norse-Slayer' who ruled the Western Coast
and Isles of Scotland in the mid-12th Century. Born of a Celtic Father and Viking
Mother, it was he who cleared the Viking pirates out of the Hebrides.
His dragon fleet of longships commanded the Western
Sea's, and at its peak his Kingdom stretched from the Isle of Skye in the
North, to the Isle of Man in the South. King Somerled fought loyally for the High King David I
of Scots at the Battle of the Standard in 1138ad, but had an unstable relationship with
David's successor, Malcolm IV. During a great sea battle off the coast of the
Isle of Man in 1156ad, he defeated Godfrey, King of Man.
Somerled mac
Gillebride was assassinated, while under truce with King Malcolm's men, at
Renfrew in 1164ad. His fame lived on through his descendents, the
mighty Clans MacDonald, MacDougall, MacRuarie and MacAllister.
