Federal Drawers were much the same as Confederate. The issue Federal Drawers were made from Canton or Domet Flannel, those of the Confederacy were usually calico or cotton twill. There was a tie back adjustment and also ties at the bottom, to stop them riding up (or to stop the ticks getting in).

The ideal way to wear them is to pull your socks over the legs; this keeps them snug and is the reason why you rarely see pictures of Civil War soldiers with their trousers tucked into their socks. Yes, even Troiani got this one wrong !
