Three of the various types of Federal Fatigue Jacket (sack coat) issued and worn during the Civil War. At left is the Schuykill Arsenal jacket. Typical of Eastern troops (Army of the Potomac in the main), this jacket could be lined or unlined and would usually be completely hand stitched.
In the centre is a Contractor Fatigue Jacket, possibly J.T. Martin. It is lined and could be partly machine sewn or fully machine sewn depending on which Depot it was issued from. Could be worn in the East, but is more typical of the Western armies (Cumberland, Tennessee, Ohio).
On the right is an unlined Fatigue Jacket of unknown provenance. This would usually be completely handsewn. All the jackets have four buttoned fronts , a fall collar and a kidney shaped pocket on the interior of the left breast.
