Ulster's best known church organist, Dr. Edred Martin Chaundy, and his wife, have died within a few days of each other.
The couple were living in retirement at Ashley Gardens, Bangor. Dr. Chaundy was in his 90th year.
His first wife died in 1946 and three years later he married again. His second wife was a well-known photographer. He had no children.
Dr. Chaundy died in Ards Hospital 10 days after the death of his wife in Bangor Hospital.
A native of Oxford he studied at the university as a young man and obtained his Doctorate of Music.
Dr. Chaundy was organist in Tershore, Gloucestershire before coming to Northern Ireland as organist at St. Mark's, Dundela, Belfast.
He also served at St. George's, High Street, Belfast, and Bangor Abbey before becoming organist of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh, in 1920.
He remained in Armagh until 1935 when he retired. But even after his retirement Dr. Chaundy continued to teach private pupils.
In his younger days he was a keen walker and cyclist. In a life devoted to music his only other outside interests were reading and gardening.
CHAUNDY - November 29, 1960, at Ards Hospital, EDRED MARTIN, Mus.D., M.A. (Oxon), formerly Organist of Armagh Protestant Cathedral (in his 90th year); also on November 19, 1960, BUELA, his wife, passed peacefully away in Bangor Hospital. Reunited.
