SIR, - In Mr. Golightly's reply to the "Statement" made by Mr. woodard, in answer to the several charges brought against his Society, and especially against St. John's at Hurstpierpoint, I notice some charges which, from my own experience (having been a resident at St. John's for the last six years), I know to be quite unfounded; it is on this ac- count onlythat I now submit to you the following facts:- I never remember, the whole time I have been there, having seen "a crucifix" among the boys. Now, I knowit would be impossible for a boy to possess one without its soon becoming known to the others, and thus reaching the ears of the masters; neither have I ever known or heard of old Johnians, on leaving, to have received from any one a crucifix. In conclusion, I would say that I amo only too thankful that Mr. Woodard has "imposed" upon me; I may also add that there is every prospect of my reminaing at St. John's for a long time to come. If in any way I could give any- body information about the different schools, I should be very glad. I am, Sir, your obedient servant. J. F. CHAUNDY. 15, Park Terrace, St. Giles's, January 2, 1862.

BIRMINGHAM, THURSDAY. - The weekly meeting of ironmasters to-day did not result in the transaction of much business, and but little improvement can be reported in the local iron trade. In consequence of the near approach of the stock-taking period there is a reluctance on the part of buyers to purchase at the end of the quarter, as they are desirous of having as small a quantity of unnecessary material as possible. ... At the Sheffield Bankruptcy Court, yesterday, a petition for liquidation of his affairs was presented by John Foulke Chaundy, of Sheffield, iron and metal mer- chant. The liabilities are estimated at £5,000.
