Ship Street Not quite flat, not quite straight, not at al lbusy; the best confection of domestic, commercial, and collegiate use in Oxford. Stopped at the Turl end by Exeter College and Sir George Gilbert Scott's needle spire on the nineteenth-century chapel (the only good view of it) with a handsome and unexpected chestnut tree in Jesus College bicycle yard overhanging. |

ROBBERY BY A BOY. - George Smith, labourer, of Ded- tabacoo, on Monday, from No. 105, High-street, the property of Richard Chaundy. - Edith Alice Chaundy, daughter of the prosecutor, said that in consequence of there having been some petty thefts recently she placed some packets of tobacco on the counter, having previously seen the prisoner outside watching the shop. She went into the back room, and then heard the shop door opened; she went into the shop, and there saw the prisoner, and she immediately noticed that one of the packets had been removed. There was no one else in the shop but the prisoner. She called to her mother that one of the packets was gone, and the prisoner then took it out of his pocket and said he would pay for it. Her father came in, and the prisoner began crying, and said he would never do it again, and he also said he had no father or mother. The value of the packet was 1s. 6d. - The prisoner pleaded guilty, and P.C. Prior said when he apprehended him he offered to pay for the tobacco, but he only had 7d. upon him. - Miss Chaundy said she had seen the prisoner in the shop twice before, and on one occasion she had missed a pack of cards and on the other a packet of tobacco. - The Bench said they were sorry to send so young a person to gaol, but they were afraid it was not his first offence, and he would have to go to gaol for 14 days. | |
