ISLIP HORTICULTURAL SHOW AND ATHLETIC SPORTS
In weather of the most auspicious character the third
annual exhibition in coinnection with the Islip Hoticul-
tural Society, which is limited in its radius to the parishes
of Beckley, Woodeston and Noke, took place on Thursday,
the locale as usual being the East Field, kindly lent for
the occasion by Mr. J. Tompkins, and the event was
attened with a measure of success which for the popu-
larity of the Society spoke volumes. For a village shoe
there was a large attendance, most of the elite of the dis-
trict being present, and during the afternoon Lord and
Lady Valentia and Mrs. Morrell put in an appearance,
and watched with considerable concern several events of
the programme of sports and jumping competitions. The
entries, were, in the section for amateurs, 270; in the
cottages' classes an aggregate of 320, or an increase of 90
on last year. Much of the success achieved is due to the
great interest displayed in the affair by the hon. secre-
taries, Miss G. Fowle and Mr. J. E. Chaundy, both of
whom deserve the highest praise, while it is almost impos-
sible to pass a too flattering compliment upon the com-
mittee for the admirable and complete manner in which
they carried out the arrangements, as everything passed
off without the slightest hitch. ...
SPECIAL PRIZES...

Grace Henmen; 3, Frances Tompkins; 4, Edith Bull.
Ditto, school children - 1, Harry Bateman; 2, May

OXFORDSHIRE MEN AT THE FRONT
Mr. James E. Chaundy, master of Islip School,
has received the following letter from his son,
Lance-Corporal Frank Chaundy, of the 1st Man-
chester Regiment, now serving in the Transvaal:
"South Africa, July 29.
Dear Father and Mother, - Just a couple of
lines to let you know I'm still getting on all
right. I got your last letter dated June 13th, and
one from *Cyril by the same amil, but this had
been on the way about four months, and had been
all over the country. We are again amongst the
fighting between Zandspruit and Standerton.
There is a mob of Boers here who got round be-
hind Buller's troops and tried to break his line
of communication; we are after them every day.
We've shifted them out of their positions and
taken a laager from them, but we are now defend-
ing the railway, and so keeping them from cutting
the line, till Buller sends down a column from
his division. I don't think the Boers can hang
out much longer. The force that's here only had
two big guns, our little party took one yester-
day, and the other is supposed to be damaged. I
think by the time you this it will be all over.
We've got a lot of Volunteers, Militia, and Re-
serve men in our battalion, to make the strength
up. They were grumbling before we got here
"because they were not amongst the fighting."
and went mad when they first got under fire, es-
pecially the Volunteers. They were taking up a
position for the night on outpost duty, a few days
since, and the Boers took them unawares. We
had to turn out and help them. The Boers took
to their heels when they saw reinforcements
coming. The Volunteers made a good stand. You
would think they had taken the Transvaal the
way they throw their chests out now. It is
terribly cold here at nights, especially aftera
day's fighting, if you get put on outpost duty,
without blankets, and sometimes nothing to
drink. We all carry a little bundle of firewood on
our backs to make a drop of tea at night and to
warm a bit of bully beef with. You have to do
your own cooking. On this job it's nothing but
bully and biscuits unless you can commandeer a
few fowls, or an odd pig now and again, but
taking it all round, I'd rather soldier this way
than in barracks. There is no pipeclay and
polishing buttons here; you've only got to keep
your rifle and bayonet in good working order, grow
a beard, and get a wash when you can, etc. I'm
quite used to roughing it on the veldt. It is now
nearly twelve months since I slept in a bed. I
see they are sending Boer prisoners to Colombo
and Ceylon - they sent a regiment from here to
escort a lot last week. They might send our
regiment with some shortly. I wish they would.
I might be able to borrow a suit of khaki and a
clean shirt from *Cyril. A rumour has just come
into camp that De Wet, Steyn, and 700 prisoners
are captured. If that is correct the war will soon
be over. Must now say adieu. I will write when
I can, but it's not often I can get the chance.
Love to all at home. - Your loving son, FRANK."
* His soldier brother, Cyril, is at Colombo.
