Claire's Pages My family history
interests are basically trying to trace my maiden name of YEARSDON.
Different
Spelling variations
that interest me I have found many spelling variations they include
Earsden, Earsdon, Easden, Easdon, Ersden, Ersdon, Yeardon, Yeardson,
Yearsdon, Yearson and Yersdon.
My research
My research started off in about 1985 and I started recording my close
family members. It wasn’t until 1992 when my father died that I
realised YEARSDON’s were far and few between and really I needed to get
some real data before they all died out. Currently there are only two
people alive with that name. My Grandmother and
only my mother uses the name. I then made
several pilgrimages to St Catherine’s House, Public Record Office,
Hull and it’s record offices and I even purchased a computer software
program to manage all the data. I then made the discovery that there was
someone out there researching EARSDON, that helped me along a bit. Then
everything ground to a halt. I then got access onto Compuserve and the
Internet and I logged into all the genealogy forums I could find. This
helped me re-organise my data more logically in preparation for sharing
data. I also found several people who were willing to search the 1994
IGI, UK & Canada phone directory CD ROM’s and to supply me with
Australia and USA on-line directory web page details for me. But now
there still isn’t really much more data to be had. It was at this
point I decided that the only way forward was to form a One-Name
Society.
I set up the One Name Society but
even simple things like what do I call it stumped me for a while. The
first stage was to cover as much of the world phone directories as
possible and to send anyone who had a similar name a carefully written
letter and a family information form and to sit back and await the
replies. (248 to be sent in total) Second was to advertise the fact that
the society exists and thirdly to write a first newsletter and to start
it’s circulation.
The society is now not running but the research continues.
