3rd May, Unlimited Bangers Battle of Britain
BA- Bears A
BB- Bears B
CZ- Crash Zone
SA- Stinkbridge A
SB- Stinkbridge B
20 cars for this years running of the Unlimited Battle of Britain at
the superbly appointed Owlerton Stadium spread across 2 teams of the
Brighton Bears, 2 of Team Stinkbridge and 1 for Crash Zone. The field
was all Granadas and Volvos save for BA421 Nige Rileys 300c and two
Jags from SB451 Willy Blackwell and SA09 Andy Holmes, both in Series
3's.
With all the cars on track for the opener and some of the
countrys best crashes you knew the action was never going to be far
away and SA318 Wilf Speak started the ball rolling by having CZ514 Paul
Woods out before SB450 Glyn Platts run BB41 Paul Pentacost in with
BA321 Brett Fry quick to weigh into the Pink man. Blackwell arrived to
blow up 321 Wingnut with 421 Nutty Nige not far behind to destroy the
451 XJ with CZ172 Simon Byrne also weighing in with a heavy blast only
to be trashed by 09 Psycho. SA294 Nigel Ashley then steamed Nutty Nige
only to cop a head on of BA169 Jason Thompson as Psycho buried BB28
Neill Osbourne into Ashley before having 28 Ozzie come off the centre
at the Stinkbridge loon with Nige also hitting the 09 XJ. The latter
recovered to t-bone BA521 Ashley Riley with CZ428 Richard Regan soon on
Psychos case, Ozzie then taking to the centre to t-bone 09 as BB422
Nick Allam took the win from CZ252 John Wibberley, BB424 Jason Pollard
and Ozzie who was the only other finisher.
A creditable field returned for the second heat with 424 the
Wizard applying the breaks on Psycho straight away as SA167 David
Holmes took out 514 Shifty allowing Thompson to blast the Crash Zone
man, Psycho then picking up Nige and following him in big time which
snapped the Bear skippers Cedric and carrier bagged it in grand style.
252 Wibbsy soon arrived on the scene to waste Psycho before taking a
shot from Thompson and a stiff t-bone from Platts who was blown up
inturn by 521 Ace Ash as on the Tavern turn 167 Bushwacker followed 422
Nicko in well only to cop one up the chuff from Pollard and a collosal
length of the straight head on from Ash. The reds came out to extract
Nige from his wreck with him emerging OK the race was declared in
favour of Nicko who took his second win with Bushwacker, the Wizard and
Ash following him home as the results were taken from the last
completed lap.
12 cars returned for the final with Ashley putting Wibbsy into a
post early doors before 172 Bernie, who had works wonders to get back
out, wasted the Pink 740 Volvo estate as Grumpy got stuck into SB455
Rick Finney with Thompson inturn firing up the back of the Crash Zone
skipper as Ozzie did Wibbsy over the back wheel and Wingnut nailed
Bernies hat back on. Grumpy then steamed the Wizard on the back
straight as Finney hit Bernie just as the latter was exiting,
thankfully no harm done with Grumpy turning it round for some revenge
on the 455 motor only to take a big head on from Ash. The reds then
came out as the promotion thought it was getting too dangerous, never
heard that one before! Wibbsy was disqualified from the restart for
allegedly cutting across the grass even though at least 1 driver from
every other team had done the same thing at some point during the day
and got away with it, which left us with just 5 Bears to race round,
Thompson taking an easy win from Wingnut and Ash which signalled the
start of the demo, Pentacost meeting Thompson in a stiff head on with
Wingnut jacking the 169 estate and Ash also giving the latter a head
on. Ash and Wingnut now met in similar fashion with the former being
declared the victor as the reds came out and celebrated by meeting
Wingnut on the nose for one last time.
Bears A took the overall victory with the B team in second and
Crash Zone third.
This wrapped up an awesome session for what cars were on offer, a
case of quality not quantity if ever there was one! It was always
expected to be heavy with the teams and drivers on offer, if it could
have had more it could have really been explosive and quite easily a
contender for meeting of the year.
