Swaffham, 29th February, Unders and Overs Hurricane

The 2004 running of the Hurricane at Swaffham attracted 82 motors to the Norfolk circuit with the 27 extras helping to swell the entry after another big no show. 59 of these were in the Unders with plenty of variety once again, including an Aerodeck, Stellar, early Audi 80, couple of Volvo 440s plus a Marina coupe for 437 Chris Bailey, a Mk2 Triumph for 557 Paranoid, lone Mk5 for 93 Chris North, a Cressida for 216 Buzzer while the Capri entry boasted 4 including a very tender Mk1 for 311 Gary Lown which proved to be Under of the meeting. Switching the the bigger stuff, their wasn't a lot amongst the 23 car showing, 5 XJ's including a fresh Series 2 for 167 Kevin Lee, the only Volvo of the meeting was in the hands of 439 Danny Sutton with a 240 while 753 Billy Cunningham had top Over with a P5B.

140 Ian Kitching got the meeting underway in the first Unders heat with a walling of Bailey on the back straight who then took a big head on from 474 Glen Beevis which snapped the Marina coupe ending his involvement straight away. 206 Kingy walled 404 Spook hard before taking 602 Shaun Cooper in but put himself in doing so as 400 Shinny followed in 741 Capt Damage superbly on the pit bend and 234 Mark Saunders hit the empty Kingy motor. The rated Shinny then executed a brillaint follow in of 348 Mushy into Capt Damages broken motor as 471 Oakey followed in Saunders hard soon after with 244 Baby Bunny the next one to join the follow in victims pile up on the pit bend after being on the wrong end of a cracking example from 140 Kitch. Shinny now run 840 Lester in as 803 Chris Murfin took the win which brought to a close an excellent opener.

The opening heat for the Overs saw 439 Danny Sutton take Mushy out early on before 998 Cotty collected the spun Lee head on, the latter recovering only to later taste the wall thanks to 7 Wally. Sutton now picked up 753 Young Guns P5B and followed him in hard seeing an early end to the Rover as the rest rubbed door handles for the rest of the race, 617 Jack Overy doing the winning while 331 Boxer Jack followed in 143 Shaun Copland with the Runner pushing drivers side up which put the door well in upon contact with the fence. Copland venting his disapproval and rightly getting his point across without the need for any fisty cuffs, Boxer meanwhile lucky to avoid a load up.

Back to the Unders now with 441 Gary LeGrice introducing 433 to the wall before 401 Psycho did the same to Beevis, 445 Mark Smith then attacking 123 Nick Oakley and Chris North weighed into Murfin on the home straight as Paranoid blew up Beevis' Bird estate and snapped his own Trummy in the process. 421 Andy Ayton meanwhile took Smith round as 550 Rob Farrington steamed the game Beevis leaving the latters estate a mess. Farrington now weighed into Murfin over the back wheel allowing Psycho in for a shot as 224 Dave Canham took the win in his Volvo 440.

The Overs now for their second heat, 733 Carl Picton putting Overy round early doors, the latter sharply recovering to have 53 Garmo out as 99 the Cheat run 33 the Legend all the way round the pit bend armco with 7 Wally taking the win.

An all in third heat for the unders was next up and Kitch hit Beevis who had partly resurrected his Bluey estate with the Incarace man taking one off Smith who was then run in at the hands of 391 Wayne Shinn. 67 Sparky buried Shinny as Kitch weighed into Shinn, Psycho then running 476 Adrian Ling in the Audi 80 into Sparky on the road bend which signalled an early end to the race as the reds appeared for Ling, 285 Lewis in the lead at the time with Isherwood taking another runner up spot.

Main race for the Overs next with Isherwood having Mushy out early with Boxer also going by the wayside, the Legend then having the Cheat out in a revenge move only for 899 Lee Madden to take him out, the Cheat delivering a big head on to the 33! motor. A long quiet period in the race with second place Overy playing catch up to Isherwood and finally catching him on the last bend & with a lunge duly took him out to take his first title of the year, Isherwood banging it into reverse but taking a head on from Garmo which left him inches from the line, so near yet so far. Wally came home in second with 245 Jack France third.

The Unders main race saw Lewis have 233 Rob Aldridge out at the start as Kitch put both 433 and Canham in, 602 Cooper arriving with a head on to Canham with Isherwood then wiping out Oakey on the back straight. The latter duly recovered to give 433 a solid follow in as Lewis pipped Isherwood to the post and duly took his second title in as many weeks with Kitch coming home in third for an Incarace 1-2-3. 135 Sean Klyn putting the latter in on the run down.

Spedeworth cancelled the Overs DD but Boxer and Madden were willing to do it, the two meeting in a couple of head ons before both expiring with a joint win declared.

Only 6 for the Unders DD but it was excellent, Aldridge t-boning Shinn from the off before doing Murfin over the back wheel, Buzzer and 867 Barry Beevor then going head to head before the former met Aldridge in the same way albeit much stiffer as Murfin hit the Cressy and Sparky inturn did Mufin. Livewire Buzzer now met Shinn in a cracking head on as Sparky weighed into Buzzer and Beevor met Murfin head on as Buzzer landed a big shot on Murfin with Sparky arriving arriving to blow up the Cressida superbly and back off to claim the win. After some concern for Murfin he exited his wreck OK, albeit very stiff!

This brought an end to a very decent meeting, the Overs let it down but the Unders more than made up for them with some excellent action all day. Maybe the way to go is all 2 Litre for next years meeting.......
