A Potted History of Aylesbury & District ABC

Aylesbury & District ABC was formed in late 1928 at a meeting held in the Castle Street Hall with Major F.W. Wakin in the Chair. Sir William Currie was elected President and a committee formed comprising of well known locals such as Bill Griffiths, Harold Caudrey, Tom Taylor and Ladbrooke Black amongst others.

Throughout its years the Club has had close links in one form or another with the local RAF camp at Halton and also the Territorial Army.

Early success arrived for the Club when Dan Riley won the Schoolboy’s Championship of Great Britain in 1930 followed in 1946 by Ken Leagus and Michael Lambourne in 1947.

Many senior boxers also made their presence felt in London and the Provinces in those early days, such as C.Beales, Hedley Rayner, Teddy Taylor, George Wilkie, F.Oakley, J.Willis, A.Langstone, Pete and Vic.Williams.

The Club moved its premises in 1937 from Castle Street Hall to the Victoria Club where it continued to prosper under the guidance of Big Bill Griffiths and Hedley Rayner.

For the past 20 or so years the Club has been sited at Quarrendon School Gym under various coaches and officials, who like their predecessors have given their time and effort freely for the benefit of not only the sport but the local community also.

The greatest Amateur boxer ever produced by Great Britain, Dick McTaggert, MBE, winner of 5 ABA titles, Olympic lightweight champion in 1956 and bronze medallist in 1960 was helped on the road to fame by Aylesbury & District ABC Trainer Bill Griffiths whilst serving at RAF Halton. McTaggert, a member of Aylesbury & District ABC won 610 out of 634 contests and appeared on many of the Clubs Shows during his time at RAF Halton.

Some other names connected to the Club’s past are: Ray Griffiths, Tony Campbell, Ron Hewitt, Tony Picot, Tim Collins, Steve Long, Ray Lewis, Oscar Angus, Barry, Derek and Neville Bennett, Mickey Flynn, Freddie Marshall, Pete Garnish, Grahame Aldridge, Michael and Ray Beeney, Michael Crawford, Danny Oakley, Mick O’Neill, Tich Rayner, Trevor Stevens, Frank Hawkins, E.
