Camping and the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)

Apply in Time

Scouting is committed to undertaking Scouting in as safe an environment as possible. It is vital therefore that camp leaders ensure that all adults are vetted with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) before a camp or other residential experience. The Association stipulates that every person who will have unsupervised access must be checked with the CRB. In almost every camping activity, it is likely that all adults will have unsupervised access at some time, whether: supervising small groups collecting wood for the fire escorting Cub Scouts to the WC looking after an injured Scout.  All of these situations and many others could leave an adult alone with young people. It is very important that Leaders build enough time into their activity planning to get those attending a camp through the CRB process. This means allowing at least eight weeks (preferably longer, twelve weeks) for the check to be completed and returned. Normally CRB checks are processed in four to six weeks, but leaving a little extra time will help if the checks take longer.  There are certain circumstances where running a CRB check on adults going to camp is unnecessary, but these are very rare. In almost all cases, a CRB check is needed. Guidance on individual camping activities can be obtained from the Scout Information Centre on 0845 300 1818 or The Records Office at Gilwell Park.

If you are in any doubt, a CRB check should be carried out.

Please ensure that the following notes are disseminated to all who will camp on or visit the site.

Statement
The Dunham Park Scout Camp provides an environment where children and young people can enjoy the activities and experiences of a camp situation, safely and securely.  The Scout Association has a clear policy to safeguard the welfare of all members by protecting them from physical, sexual or emotional harm.  All adults mush take all reasonable steps to ensure that everyone using the site is safeguarded and protected from harm.  Adult leaders have been issued with yellow cards "Young People First" child protection policy.  Any concerns should be reported to the duty warden immediately.  Camp leaders are responsible for ensuring that all their Leaders and helpers are aware and comply with this Scout Association policy.  Additional information for outside organisations is included.

Site Shop
The campsite has a well stocked shop selling sweets, drinks and souvenirs.  Campers are not permitted to sell their own goods on site.  The shop is usually open 10am (after flag break) and 2pm and 7pm (Saturdays only).  On quiet weekends, the shop is open by arrangement with the Duty Warden.

Public Telephone
A public telephone is available at all times for everyone to use (tel: 0161 928 1699).  Leaders should ensure that all campers know of its location next to the shop and that everyone can use it at anytime without permission of a leader.

Chemical Toilets
On the occasion of large camps, groups may wish to use chemical toilets.  Please make arrangements with the duty warden for emptying.  On no account should they be emptied on the activity field.  Biodegradable Racsan is most suitable for our septic tank.

Waste Matter
Waste water emptying points are provided adjacent to each water tap.  We do not permit wet pits.  All rubbish should be burnt where possible.  We have a problem with foxes and wild cats so any bags of rubbish should be placed in the incinerator for burning and not directly in the skip.

Insurance
Please note that only members of the Scout Association are covered by Scout Insurance.  Non-members (sons, daughters & spouses of leaders, mothers, fathers, brothers & sisters of members) are not insured for personal injury.  We therefore cannot allow non-members to take part in site activities.  You can extend your cover for such people through the Scout Association Insurance at Lancing.  We would need proof of such cover prior to any event.  Leaders are responsible for obtaining parental consent for all activities.  Every young person under 16, must have a written note from their parent or guardian allowing that person to take part in any adventurous activity.  Such written consent can only be given if parents are aware in writing of proposed activities.

Activity Instruction
Whilst we provide equipment for your use we are unable to provide instruction.  You will be required to provide documentary proof that your instructor complies with Scout Association requirements.  All activities must comply with the up-to-date Policy Organisation and Rules of the Scout Association.

Deer Park
The National Trust allow campers to use the deer park for activities.  Access is via the stile.  Please note that there are areas within the Deer Park which are out of bounds to all humans.  These are usually marked by low rail fences.  Please keep out of these areas during the fawning season (usually May to July) and the rutting season (October).  There is access through the deer sanctuary.  Please keep to the marked footpaths.  The park is closed at dusk and no access is possible during the hours of darkness.
