The University recently played host to a number of distinguished guests from Egypt at an Egyptian Day arranged by Eman El-Abd, President of the Universitys Egyptian Students Union (ESU). The event was organised to promote and raise awareness of Egyptian culture and civilisation, and to develop the relationship between the University and bodies responsible for sponsoring Egyptian students in the UK. Similar events have been organised at other universities in the past, but have never received such important visitors or coverage by the UK Egyptian press (International Ahram and Elshark El-Awsat).
The University was honoured to welcome Counsellor Mohammed Sad and Counsellor Ahmed Taha from the Egyptian Embassy in London, Dr Ashraf Yosri and Mrs Gamela Shaker from the Educational and Cultural Bureau in London, Mohammed Abd El-Salam, President of the Egyptian Students in UK and Ireland and Egyptian students from Liverpool, Manchester, Bradford and Sheffield.
The day included an exhibition of Egyptian tourism, press, food, literature and famous people. As well as computer and video shows about the most important historical, multi-religious, seaside, and even diving sites.
The afternoon session turned to academic matters and the visitors were treated to lectures about the Universitys latest archaeological discoveries in Marsa Matruh by Dr Stephen Snape (SACOS) and about Egypt - past and present - by a current research student in SACOS. Following the lectures, a meeting was held between the embassy officials and the supervisors of Egyptian research students at Liverpool to discuss current issues and problems. Both sides thought that the meeting was so useful that a follow up meeting with the new Educational and Cultural Counsellor, Dr Wadoda is being planned. If anyone is interested in attending the meeting (date to be arranged), please contact Ursula Henry in the International Recruitment and Relations Office (uhenry@liv.ac.uk, ext 46731).
