"Cisco's Story"
By Horse Crazy
About 3 years ago, my parents bought me a black and white paint pony, Cisco. He had been badly abused for most of his life. When I first got him you could not even touch his muzzle. He still had bad scars on his face from his days of being a barrel racer and being beat in the head to go faster. When I bought him, I never could have known the work and time it would take to get his trust back. For about the first 4 months that I owned him, he couldn't be ridden without him standing on his hind legs. Stopping him was a major problem. I have been runaway with more times than I want to remember.
For the first two years of owning Cisco, I barrel raced him and won many blue ribbons and one very cherished high point award. He starting acting very skittish and hated going in the arena so then came the task of finding out what an ex-abused barrel racer wanted to do for the rest of his life.
I finally decided to try riding him English. I had always admired dressage riders and how they communicated with their horses. Come to find out, Cisco loves it just as much as I do! Even though I can't use any type of leg pressure because of his past experiences at his other homes, Cisco and I are actually turning out to be really good at this dressage thing. He has become calmer and we have created such a strong bond that he will not let anyone else ride unless I lead him around. He is an awesome little horse. I wanted to share with everyone that no matter how many struggles you go through, you always need to have hope.
P.S. Look for me and Cisco at any English event in Florida. And watch for me and my Paint Stallion "Made In Dallas", (Dallas), on Hunter-Jumper Circuit for 2003.
