Erika Jones and Meghan O'Driscoll took part in an Irish Junior Squad training session in County Waterford last weekend. They had great fun, and they also did some orienteering. Thanks to Mary Healy for bringing them and for organizing the weekend. Let's hope that what they learnt is put into practice and pays off in next year's championship events.
Jean O'Neill reports on her experiences at the World Masters Orienteering Championships in Australia
At the Munster Championships, Erika Jones won the W12A Class. The event was run by Bishopstown Orienteers in Parkmountain Wood, in East Cork. Sean Cotter's courses were excellant, making the best use of the runnable sections of the forest, and despite a section having been clearfelled just before the event. It was good to go to an event in a nice forest that hadn't been used before. Hopefully a few more events will be held there before the rest of the white sections are felled. Rumour has it that the BOC 3-day will be held in this area in the spring. It should be worth going to, if the other forests are like this one.
Thanks to all for coming and making it a very pleasant day for us. Conditions were ideal for a nice run in the park. Thanks to Jean for planning. We all hope she is getting on well at the World Masters Orienteering Championships in Australia. Thanks to Tommy for organizing, and to all others who helped out, Bernie, Doug, Val, Ian, Fearghal, Ciara, and Deirdre.
Fearghal Burke at the Shamrock Oringen in West Cork, or maybe Kerry. He won the M12 class there.
Our other events this season will be a Night-O event in St. Anne's park on January 14th, and a Leinster League event on Rockmarshal on the 2nd of March. Jean is planning the Ardgillan event, Val is planning the St. Anne's event, ( unless someone else wants to volunteer ), and Fran Lafferty is planning the Rockmarshal event. We may also have another event, perhaps on the 15th of December or after Christmas, on one of our new areas, Ward River Valley in Swords, or Howth Summit. On the mapping front we also have progress on Carnawaddy. Pat Healy got aerial photographs for us from the Ordinance Survey and they have been sent to Stirling surveys to produce photogrametry. Our target is to run a Leinster Championship there in 2005.
A provisional event list has been issued for the coming season. See EVENT PAGE for details. Our first event will be a Come-and-try-it event in Ardgillan Park on the 6th of October, which this year is a revived National Orienteering Day.
Tommy Burke finishing at the BELGIAN THREE DAY.
John Rowe emerges from the Ardennes forest.
If anyone else goes on any interesting trips over the summer we would love if you could send a report and share your experiences.
