Results for Howth Event, 11th May 2003
Thanks to all for coming, and thanks to all who helped out,
Bernie Sharkey, Jean O'Neill, Deirdre O'Neill, Alex Bogomolez, Ian Murphy,
Ciaran Young, and Mick O'Keeffe. I hope I haven't missed anyone.
Apologies for running out of maps and having to recycle them. I didn't predict the numbers
very well, especially on the medium course. If anyone who didn't get to keep their map
would like a copy please email me or contact me (Val Jones) and I will send you one.
Jean O'Neill, our perennial champion, came 2nd overall in the JK, in the W55L class. Quite an achievement in this prestigious event, held this year just west of London, and the best Irish performance of the weekend.
The final club event of the season will take place at Howth Summit on Sunday, 11th May. The parking and registration will be at the car park near the Summit Inn, on the right as you go over the hill on the main road around the Howth Peninsula, coming from Sutton. Grid Reference - O292372. Coming from Dublin turn right at Sutton Cross, coming from Baldoyle continue straight through. There will be 3 courses available on the day, a short equivalent to yellow, a medium equivalent to orange, and a long Sprint-O course equivalent to green.
The Irish Championships take place at Silent Valley in Co. Down on Saturday, 3rd May for the individual event and the relays the following day.
The Leinster Championships took place last Sunday at Oldboleys, near Glencree in Wicklow. Fingal placings were Erika Jones, 1st W14, Jean O'Neill 1st W55, Kathryn Walley 2nd W40, Ian Murphy 3rd M21S, and Doug Corrie 3rd M45. Also taking part were Deirdre O'Neill, Mick O'Keeffe, John Rowe, Tommy, Cathal, and Fearghal Burke, Padraig Kearns, Alan Murphy, and Fiach O'Rourke. Val Jones was also controller - quite a good turnout of club members for a major event. The longer courses were quite tough having to cross areas of high heather to get to a section of old turf cuttings on the western side of the map. The day was a bit drizzly, unfortunately one of the only wet days for some weeks. Nevertheless the event was well organized, everything went off well and there were no serious complaints on the day.
A club meeting took place on Tuesday the 8th of April in the FOXES DEN, in Ashbourne. It looks like this will become the permanent venue for club meetings. The plan for next year is to have 7 club events, with 2 on the same day, on National Orienteering Day. However they are all local events apart from a Leinster League event in Dún A Rí in March so they should not put too much strain on club members.
The Connaught Championships took place recently at Woodford, Co. Galway. From Fingal Jean O'Neill came first in W55 and Kathryn Walley came second in W40.
Erika Jones and Meghan O'Driscoll traveled with the junior squad to the Ballyhoura 3-day in East Cork, where they had some tough training sessions as well as competing in the 3-Day on courses more advanced than their normal age class. Nevertheless they still enjoyable weekend. Thanks to Mary Healy for bringing them and Ed Niland for organizing the training sessions.
Results for Rockmarshal Leinster League Event
Thanks to all who made the trip. Thanks to Tommy Burke for Planning, Val Jones for Controlling, and Doug Corrie for Organizing. Thanks to all other Fingal Members who came and helped out - John Rowe, Bernie Sharkey, Jean O'Neill, Ray Linn, Ciaran Young, and Mick O'Keeffe. I hope I haven't missed anyone. Sorry about the tough going and heavy vegetation growth which made the times considerably longer than at previous Rockmarshal events. A combination of wet weather, mild winter, and missing sheep due to the F+M. was probably to blame.
Doug Corrie finishing the recent Mt. Maulin Hill race at Crone wood car park.
The critical stage of the Leinster League is here with 5 events over the next 5 weeks. They are
2nd Feb, Avondale, LL8.
9th Feb, Sugarloaf, LL9.
16th Feb, Phoenix Park, LL10.
23th Feb, Saggart, LL11.
2nd Mar, Rockmarshal, LL12.
You need to complete 9 events out of 16 to complete the league, so you need to get to as many
of these events as you can to maximize your points. There are plenty of prizes to be fought
for in each course, and in various age classes.
St. Anne's Park Night-O RESULTS, 14th Jan 2003
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all Fingal Orienteers and other visitors to this site.
Our first event of the new year will be the Night-O event in Saint Anne's Park on Tuesday evening, the 14th of January. The event is being planned by Val Jones. Our Leinster League event will be held at Rockmarshal, near Dundalk, on the 2nd of March. It is being planned by Francis Lafferty, and organised by Tommy Burke. As this is our biggest event of the year we will need all the assistance we can get so if you can help please contact Tommy before the event. We are also planning to have a Short-O event on the 11th of May, on a new map of Howth. Val Jones will also be planning this as the map is almost complete. Furthermore on the mapping front, we have received the plot of Carnawaddy, which looks very promising. There will be plenty of surveying to be done in the summer, so if you are interested contact Val Jones or Tommy Burke. Hopefully the weather will be a bit better than last summer.
Congratulation to Eileen and Ciaran Young on the birth of their first child, Orla. All are doing well and Eileen is hoping to show her off at an Orienteering event soon.
