INFORMATION

Birthdate: 12/04/82 Birthplace: Belgrade, former Yugoslavia Current abode: Sydney, Australia Height: 1.73 metres (5'7") Weight: 56 Kg

Jelena was born in the former Yugoslavia, but in 1994, moved to Australia, near to Sydney, and that is where she now considers herself to be a citizen. She is one of the best young players to come out of the junior ranks in recent years and hopes to follow in friend Martina Hingis's footsteps by claiming the number one spot.

She was ranked as the #1 junior last year and turned professional after winning the US junior open.

Jelena is a powerful hitter of the ball with excellent technique, and groundstrokes, and certainly with improvement, could go on to be a major player in women's tennis. After this years performance in the Australian Open and the French Open(knocked out of both by Martina Hingis) Jelena rose up the rankings to break the top 150. After the Wimbledon performances, Jelena will break the top fifty, and all this in her firt year as a professional! As many of you will have gathered, Jelena is not following of her Eastern European counterpart, Anna Kournikova, by using her fame and good looks to attract attention. Jelena is not a primadonna, and is a very down to earth kind of girl, who is not letting this moment of fame go to her head. After Wimbledon, her fan base will have grown immensely, but hopefully, Jelena's calm nature will still prevail, and she will rise to the top, without letting fame get the better of her.

RESULTS SO FAR

Round 1: beat Martina Hingis 6-2 6-0.

Jelena suddenly shoots to fame with a devastating victory over #1 Martina Hingis. Jelena demolishes her with some excellent match play, and superb ground strokes.

Round 2: beat Katerina Studenikova 6-0 4-6 7-5.

Against a more experienced campaigner, but an opponent for whom grass is not a favourite surface, again things get better and better. Although not quite recapturing the form of the first round, Jelena wins in a relatively even game.

Round 3: beat Anne Kremer 6-7 6-3 6-4.

Again, a slightly shaky performance, but Jelena comes through in three sets. It seems that without the pressure of the big game, Jelena's game is not quite as strong.

Round 4: beat Mary Pierce 6-4 6-3.

After going 4-1 down in the first set, it was looking a bit grim for Jelena, as Mary Pierce was clearly dominating the game with some superb hitting, and outpowering Jelena. However, Jelena mounted an incredible comeback, to take the rest of the games in the set. From there on, Jelena looked to be the stronger player, and she dominated the next set.

Quarter Finals: lost to Alexandra Stevenson 3-6 6-1 3-6

After her superb run, Jelena finally ran out of luck and form and succumbed to another exciting prospect from America. Although Jelena played a superb second set, the pressure was more on her to come through, but the hard hitting American's serves were just too much for her. However, she should build from success in this tournament, and she will surely continue her meteoric rise up the rankings. Good luck to her for the forthcoming US Open.
