| The Gambia's proximity to Europe - just 6 hours
flight away - makes it a popular long-haul winter sun
destination and these peak winter months are also when
the weather is at its best. Temperatures are hot at this
time but tempered by cooling breezes off the Atlantic and
there's a large amount of sunshine and hardly any rain.
Occasionally, between January and April, a wind called
the Harmattan occurs. This blows in from the Sahara at
near gale force and brings with it a lot of fine red dust
but your chances of experiencing it are slim. The rainy season occurs between June and September. Although much of the rain tends to fall in the hours of darkness, there is also increased cloudiness and it's a lot more humid than in the winter. In fact July to September especially the Temperature Humidity Index ( a measure of how it really feels) is very high and any movement at all will be an effort! |
