the
company
- past
- history and background
Hydrae Productions was founded in April 1998 by a group of directors,
actors and writers who met at The City Literary Institute ('The City
Lit') in Holborn, London, England. Famous City Lit graduates include
Steven Berkoff and Richard Wilson.
The aim of Hydrae, from the very first, was to perform original new
drama combining the skills of Hydrae's members as a means of keeping
and developing skills and to promote members in their respective careers.
The name of the company derives from the plural of the many headed Hydra
of Greek mythology, and reflects both the multifaceted nature of the
company and its members, and the multiple play show format that has
been adopted so far.
- present
- a
diverse range of talent
At any one time Hydrae has about forty active members and most of our
shows have included the work of at least two dozen actors, six directors,
four writers, as well as important members backstage. Their efforts
are contributed on a voluntary basis, but the Company includes actors,
directors, writers, designers and technical staff working to a professional
standard. We believe the best way to keep current in one's profession
is to stay active.
Many members take paying work outside the Company and return to Hydrae
when their schedules permit. One of the strengths of Hydrae is the range
of expertise amongst its people. These skills, including marketing,
electronic engineering, music composition and graphic design, expand
the capabilities of the Company.
- future
- a
new theatre in town
Hydrae's eventual aim is to obtain a venue of its own, and offer more
formal training for its members in the future. These are ambitious goals
and will require sponsorship, donations and grants. If you would like
to offer help to Hydrae, please contact
us.
