The serious crisis in Iraq has led many University teachers and other academics to flee their homes to seek refuge in other countries. In an effort to safeguard the welfare, protect the interest and preserve the scientific integrity of the expatriate Iraqi academics, the "Association of Iraqi Academics" (AIA) was founded on 3rd July 1994 in London. Among the aims of the AIA are to organise workshops, conferences and seminars in an attempt to promote scientific knowledge within the Iraqi community and to highlight the problems and difficulties afflicting the Academic Institutions in Iraq.
Other aims and aspirations
1. Develop scientific and professional links with other international scientific and academic institutions and societies. 2. Publish a monthly bulletin and a biannual scientific journal. 3. Produce a directory of expatriate Iraqi University teachers and academics. 4. Provide consultations and specialised studies.
AIA membership is open to all current and ex- university teachers, researchers and academics with higher degrees who are living outside Iraq.
A General Meeting is held once a year to discuss, amend and make new policies as well as to elect executive committee comprised of 7 members for one year. The duty of the executive committee is to implement the resolutions passed by the General Meeting. The executive committee can also appoint distinguished Iraqi academics to serve on the board of the Science (and Art, Literature) Academy in an advisory capacity.
AIA is an independent non-profitable organisation that in the future may have a charitable status. The budget of AIA is from annual membership fees, voluntary donations from members, international academic institutions, fund raising events and income from consultations and studies. The AIA has the authority to establish branches inside and outside the UK.
