Saturday 8th September 2001
LOCH AWE CRUISE
Depart 1.00 pm

The Society has chartered the Loch Awe Steam Packet Company's m.v. Flower of Scotland for a four-hour cruise on Loch Awe for members and friends. The cruise will depart from Loch Awe pier, below Loch Awe village, 2 miles from Dalmally on the A85 at 1.00 p.m. prompt. We plan to land on Fraoch Eilean and Inishail but the operator's decision on whether weather conditions will permit this will be final. Tickets for the cruise are priced at £10 per person. IMPORTANT NOTE: There are no piers on these islands and landings will be made by means of transfer to the ship's boat.

These two hard to reach islands are of considerable historical interest - Inishail has the old Cladich Parish Church with interesting 14th to 16th century carved tombstones as well as an early Cross Slab. Fraoch Eilean has a ruined castle dating to the 13th century.

The Flower of Scotland can accommodate 56 passengers and bookings are on a "first come, first served" basis. No entry on board without pre-booked tickets. Please do not leave booking until the last minute - you are likely to be disappointed. Tickets will be sent out to all members whose bookings are accepted and cheques returned when the ship's capacity has been reached.

We would suggest that you bring a packed lunch - light refreshments may also be purchased at The Pierhead Café. Members might care to meet together afterwards for an evening meal at the Glenorchy Lodge Hotel.

Details of the architectural remains of the islands appears in "The Buildings of Scotland: Argyll & Bute" by Frank A. Walker (Penguin) and on the RCAHMS web-site www.rcahms.gov.uk. The RCAHMS publication "Argyll an inventory of the ancient monuments: Vol.2 Lorn" is also worth consulting. The "Loch Awe" chapter of Seton Cordon's "Highways & Byways in the West Highlands" (Birlinn) deals with these islands and the traditions and legends of the area.

To book enclose £10 per place. Please make cheques payable to The Neil Munro Society.
