Visiting Oxford

If you are planning to visit Oxford and want to take in some C.S.Lewis sights then here are some suggestions:

Eagle and Child (Bird and Baby)

Eagle and Child Pub

The Eagle and Child is the pub in which C.S.Lewis, J.R.R.Tolkein and others held their Inklings meetings. The Inklings nicknamed the pub the 'Bird and Baby'.

Directions: With Carfax Tower directly behind you, turn left down Cornmarket Street. You should eventually reach a crossroads with George Street on your left and Broad Street on your right. Carry straight over this crossroads into Magdalen Street. This street should turn into St. Giles. You should continue to walk on the left of St. Giles. The Eagle and Child can be found on the left handside of the street before St. Giles splits into two (Woodstock Road and Banbury Road).

The Kilns, Headington Quarry

Kilns The Kilns is the house in which C.S.Lewis, W.H.Lewis and Joy Lewis nee Gresham lived.

Directions: It is situated in Headington which is a suburb in the north-east of Oxford. Most buses that leave from High Street travel to Headington. The house can be found towards the end of Lewis Close. However be considerate! It is now home to students studying in Oxford. I believe that tours of the Kilns will be available at certain times.

Magdalen College, High Street

Magdalen College, Oxford C.S.Lewis lectured and researched at Magdalen College from 1925 - 1954.

Directions: Magdalen College is within easy walk of the city centre. From Carfax (with Carfax Tower directly behind you) walk straight down High Street. Continue straight down this street. Magdalen College is situated on the left, before you cross Magdalen Bridge, opposite the Botanic Gardens. The College usually charges £2 entry fee. C.S.Lewis lived in New Building. Both C.S.Lewis' old rooms and Magdalen Tower are not open to the public.

Trout

Trout Pub The Trout is another pub in which C.S.Lewis and J.R.R.Tolkein met.
