MORE PAINTINGS OF THE EPIC BATTLE
BATTLE OF THE IRONCLADS
Above, a detailed description of the battle of Angamos by Peruvian painter Saldivar, which depicts with intense dramatism, the fight and the difficult conditions that the Huascar (center) faced being surrounded by several Chilean warships. To have an idea about this battle, each of the two Chilean battleships was armed with twenty diverse caliber guns, three Gatlings and four 14 inch torpedo launchers, while the schooner Covadonga had seven guns. A total of 47 guns and six Gatlings, against five guns of the Huascar. Despite her disadvantage, Huascar resisted for more than one and a half hour. Below, a painting by artist Guillermo Spiers. Both canvas are at the Naval Museum of Peru. (Courtesy Rear Admiral Frank Boyle and Commander John Hopkins, Peruvian Navy)
