 FEEDING YOUR FERRET

PROPER NUTRITION FOR YOUR FERRET Food, mmmm...we eat a lot.

The best type of ferret food to get your ferret is the type made just for ferrets. Because they require a high protein diet (Ferrets need a daily protein intake of over 30%) other foods not specifically made for them may not meet their needs. But if you're in a pinch kitten food will substitute, just remember to give your ferret his ferret vitamins. Ferrets eat about every four hours, so have food available at all times.

Treats

There are many types of ferret treats available but it's a hit or miss game. Every ferret has his own taste in ferret treats so experiment a bit.

Human food is not good for your ferret but let's be realistic, a little human food will sneak into your ferret one way or another. You may break down in a moment of extreme cuteness or he may steal it from you in a moment of extreme sneakiness.

It is recommended to stay away from:

  • Chocolate
  • Dairy products
  • Sugary stuffs
  • Salty stuffs
  • Bones
  • High fibre foods

Some Favourites

These are a few items I give to my ferrets as special treats. Only a very small portion and on rare occasions.

  • Apples
  • Licks of ice cream
  • Cooked meats
  • Fruit Loops
  • Crisps
  • Crackers
  • Grapes cut in pieces
  • Cheerios (breakfast cereal)
  • Broccoli

I let them decide what they want to try and introduce things to them occasionally. Beware of the bandit ferret. He will come to see what you are eating and if it's in a bag he'll want the whole bag. Eugene, one of my ferrets, will steal an entire bag of chips or grapes as soon as I turn my back. So, if you see a trail of grapes leading under the couch guess what! Eugene will even steal olives and pickles from me.

Vitamins or supplements

There are a lot of different types of ferret vitamins available check out what your vet or local pet store has.
