- Early reports of
today's meeting between Chris Smith, the
Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport,
and Sir Rodney Walker, head of WNSL, suggest that
a compromise has been reached over the new
Wembley. Under the new plans, the stadium would
be completed in time for the 2005 world
championships with a track which would
subsequently be moved to allow spectators to
watch football and rugby league matches. Outside
the main stadium, a secondary arena would be
built which would initially serve as the warm-up
track for the world championships, and later be
converted into a 15,000-seat permanent home for
UK Athletics

- Chris Smith, the
Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport
has thrown the future of the new Wembley in fresh
chaos, by announcing that Wembley must adhere to
four new principles.
That the stadium must be completed in time to
stage the 2005 World Athletics Championships.
That any design must leave a permanent legacy for
athletics.
The plans must not include a running track being
constructed on concrete platforms with these
removed after the 2005 championships. The
Government views this option as prohibitively
expensive.
Any new plans must provide better value for the
public purse.
A showdown meeting with Sir Rodney Walker, head
of WNSL is scheduled for later today

Football Club's dream of moving to a £15 million
state of the art stadium at Meole Brace was dealt

said any development linked to a new stadium
should be limited to sport and recreation. The
stadium scheme, which depends on funding from
housing, was withdrawn hours before it was due to
