Fana - Ancient Rome
In a time long ago, in a
place that we know little of lived a black eyed maiden of exceptional beauty.
Men gazed upon her beauty and lusted after her. But she was pure and
untouched.
She lived by very humble means, working for food, shelter and warmth, because
Fana was alone in the world, she had no family to help or care for her, she
worked hard to stay alive, and alive she was. She knew little of love and
tenderness, one man who swore to love her was more interested in his lusty
feelings than those of the maiden, and Fana was repelled.
It was a cold night and Fana was journeying to a village that this foul man
leapt upon her from behind, he shouted at the terrified Fana as he grabbed
her, "Now you are mine fair maid, there is no escape, your cries will
fade into the cold night air, unanswered." He laughed a menacing laugh
which frightened Fana even more.
Fana had no one, but the
Moon saw everything.
In desperation Fana threw herself upon the cold night earth and sobbed, "
I have no one, only thou, O Moon, help me in my time of need,
help me please in my time of need O Lady of the Midnight Skies."
Fana looked up, her beautiful face covered with earth, her eye wide from fear,
before her she saw the most beautiful Spirit of light,
"Rise up child and continue on your journey, no-one will harm you now,
you shall be protected by my silver light, you shall be a Goddess of the Moon,
and Queen of all Enchantment."
As time passed all became true, the poor , honest peasant girl became a
shining light, the Spirit of the Night, henceforth Fana became a Goddess of
the Moon.
**Some versions of this tale relay the Spirit as a Unicorn**
