Students' coming-of-age celebrations vary
in cultures
Andrea Villagrana Reporter
Many children dream of the day when they can step outside and know
they aren't considered a child anymore.
Their adolescence can be recognized through many different methods
in many different cultures.
In America, some teens consider their 16th birthday to be their big
step into society. In Mexico, young girls are considered women after their
15th birthday. And at the age of 13, Jewish girls are considered mature after
their Bat Mitzvah. And for boys, they are 13 for their Bar Mitzvah.
Mexico's adolescent girls dream of the day when they dress formally,
go to the church, and everyone present honors them on their special day.
This special day doesn't have to be their birthday, but on any day
between their 15th and 16th birthday. "You should start preparing a year
before," said junior, Ana Carrasco. There is the church ceremony, which is
the most important event of a Quincenera, the dinner party, and the dance.
"You have to be baptized, had your first communion, and had your
confirmation," said junior, Anel Ramirez, on the requirements for being a
Quincenera. The Quincenera reads from the Bible as well as some of her damas
or chambelanes (females and males she chooses to honor her).
There are 14 of each damas, and chambelanes. At the dance, they perform
a waltz, along with the honored girl, in which each chambelan dances with
her.
This celebration can be spendy, but luckily the parents have help
from the godparents. The dress, which is similar to a wedding dress, a ring,
necklace, and Bible, and two bouquets are bought by the godparents if the
parents wish.
"Being a godmother is expensive," said Ramirez.
In more traditional celebrations, the parents buy everything, a price
that can reach up to $2,000. "And if your first daughter is a Quincenera,
your other daughters have the choice whether they want to be or not," said
Carrasco. "It doesn't matter if you have ten daughters." Jewish adolescents
don't have to wait as long as Mexicans, but their Bar or Bat Mitzvahs are
just as important.
It is after this special celebration when a girl or boy is considered
responsible for his or her actions. Parents "no longer take responsiblilty
for their children's actions," said sophomore, Selena Gell. The day of Gell's
Bat Mitzvah, she was required to read from the Torah, the Five Books of Moses.
"It is difficult because it is written in Hebrew. It has to be chanted, and
there are no vowels or music," said Gell. According to her, you can honor
family and friends by asking them to read from the Torah also.
Her parents gave her a blessing and family from across the country
came on her special day. She considers it her entrance to the community and
the end of her childhood. Her Bat Mitzvah allows her the choice of participation
in Jewish activities, according to Gell. "It was the most moving experience
of my life," she said.
