FISH & CHIPS the Musical!

By Jim Woodland

A new piece of music theatre commissioned by

Nottinghamshire's new arts, new county programme

Directed by Tony Lidington, Designed by Simon Pell

The little fish and chip shop down by the canal, next to the lock gate, tucked away underneath the railway arches, has been sealed up and empty for many years. When Fran Wilton receives a letter from Australia saying she has been left the property by her late Aunt Dot. She turns up with her ex husband Marty and her new friend Neil to give it the once over and to see if she can uncover dark secrets from her family history. Though the shop has been bricked up and all but lost to the world, Fran soon realises that it is not empty. An itinerant called Mary is staying there and she takes Fran on a journey of discovery across a hundred years of queues, newspaper salt and vinegar, fish, chips and mushy peas, to see what drove the people who lived there. As Mary says ‘The plan was always simple enough. Work hard, get rich, have kids, be happy. Well a lot can happen in a fish and chip shop between opening and closing time And those who walk in the door may know what they want, but whether or not they get it is a different kettle of fish. You can put in your order, but if 'get rich, have kids and be happy' is 'off Love’, then all you get is hard work. You can wrap that up in any newspaper you like, and it’ll still come out cold and one day it’ll stick in your throat

Fran goes with Mary on a journey through time as she comes to understand the family, the industry, and the people that made her. Stories and songs, laughter and tears, and more than a few ghosts - Frying tonight!!! Fish and Chips - the Musical!

This play is best suited for family groups (children 8 & up).
