e-mail the secretary for full details. About Naphill Tennis ClubAccording to an entry in the Silver Jubilee book "Naphill through five reigns" a group of enthusiasts formed Naphill Tennis Club in about 1921. The first grass court was made in a piece of land at Kate Cottage opposite the Black Lion. After the village hall was built the club moved to a grass court where the Scout hut now stands. As its popularity grew, a single hard court was constructed in its present location, a second being added in the 1960s and the third in the 1970s. The first "club-house" was actually a discarded builder's site hut with no running water or toilet facilities. The present one, complete with mod cons, is the result of sterling fund raising by the committee chaired by the late Mick Curtis in the 1980s. The latest make-over took place during 1998/99 when the committee in office successfully ploughed through the National Lottery application mine-field and secured a grant to resurface the courts, renew the netting and provide new facilities such as the practice wall. This year we have Men's and Ladies' teams in the Bucks Shield and Aylesbury leagues, as well as two Mixed teams in the HW League. The Junior Section has U/17, U/15 and U/13 teams in the Junior Leagues. During the winter season we also run a Ladies Vets (over 40s) team. We are keen to encourage local youngsters to become interested in playing tennis and have run a very active Junior Section in the summer season for many years. This year we have secured the services of a professional LTA Coach, Simon Langley, who will be running the Junior Club Evenings as coaching sessions, subsidised by the club, thus obviating the need to pay extra fees for separate coaching. Simon will also be very pleased to arrange private coaching, not only for Juniors but for any club member who wants to brush up their playing skills. Members are welcome to use the courts at any time except when required for club sessions, match play or tournaments. Match fixtures lists are displayed on the notice board in the Club house.
We have vacancies for new members in both Junior & Senior sections. For further details please contact our Membership Secretary, Sue Crooks on 01494 562539 or apply by e-mail to
the secretary.
