Pontypridd Town Association Football Club was formed in 1992  but any history of this club has to include information on Ynysybwl Football Club, the Welsh League team who merged with Pontypridd Sports & Social and moved home to play in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park in the heart of the South Wales market town of Pontypridd, and Pontypridd/Ynysybwl as the club were known for one season while the transformation was taking place.

Also mention must be made of the great professional football team called simply Pontypridd but famously nicknamed the Dragons which competed in the Southern League and Welsh League in the 1920’s, although the present club has no connection to this once great team.

Pontypridd Town Association Football Club

The present club was formed in 1992 when Pontypridd/Ynysybwl officially changed it’s name. The new club’s first competitive game was on 29/8/92 and ended in a 2-1 defeat in the Welsh League Cup at Goytre United. The first league match came one week later on 5/9/92 with a 4-1 defeat at Brecon Corinthians in the first division of the Welsh League and the first home game a 1-1 draw against Bridgend Town on 26/9/92. Ponty also drew their next 2 games before clinching their first ever victory in the top division of the Welsh League with a resounding 6-1 win at Morriston on 17/10/92. As confidence grew Ponty began to climb the league, bolstered by their superb home form at Ynysangharad Park. Of their 13 home games in a division reduced in size by the formation of the League of Wales, Ponty won 10 and drew 3, remaining undefeated on their own ground all season. The team eventually finished in third place in the league, still the best ever performance by the club to this day.

In 1993/94 Pontypridd Town consolidated their position as one of the top sides in the Welsh League with a fifth place finish in a first division won by the all conquering Barry Town side who had returned to Welsh domestic football after several years in the English Southern League. Barry clinched an amazing 4 trophies - Welsh League & Cup, Welsh FA Trophy and Welsh FA Cup with a 2-1 win over Cardiff City in the final at Cardiff Arms Park. Ponty showed their quality when former Welsh international Alan Curtis scored twice to save Barry in a 2-2 draw at Ynysangharad Park whilst Ponty lost 2-1 at Barry despite having the better of the game and hitting the woodwork twice. Prominent players this season were Ryan Price and Romano Bacchetta up front, Dean Morris and Mark Gibson in midfield and Garfield Leask and Jason Morris at the back.

1994/95 was another memorable season on and off the pitch. The club had to play all their opening matches away from home as work continued on new changing rooms and clubhouse and upgrades to the pitch and stand, which now included seats for the first time. The ground was officially re-opened on 15/10/94 for the visit of neighbours AFC Porth in the Welsh Cup Second Round in front of BBC cameras. A large crowd saw Ponty come from behind to win 3-2 and the draw for the Third Round was shown live on BBC Wales from the clubhouse after the game. Unfortunately Ponty were drawn away to Risca and went out 2-0. There was a better run in the League Cup with Ponty eventually going out to Briton Ferry Athletic in the semi-finals. An average showing in the league saw Ponty finish in a respectable mid table position - 11th out of 19 clubs, but they also recorded their highest ever score twice with 8-0 home wins over both Ferndale Athletic and Pembroke Borough. On the other hand Ponty also fell to their worst defeat, also 8-0 at eventual champions Briton Ferry Athletic. Outstanding for Ponty this season was young striker Andrew James, better known as “Stan”, and easily the most gifted player ever to have worn a Pontypridd Town shirt. He had all the ability needed to be a star of the Premiership and was still being paid by Chelsea when he arrived at Ponty. However he wasted his natural talents and instead of earning a fortune as a professional he was content to terrorise defences for his hometown club as an amateur. One example of his nature was when he arrived at a game badly the worse for wear after a heavy drinking session the night before and said he was too ill to play. The manager told him he had to play but would substitute him if he scored a hat trick. Stan notched three goals in the first half hour and walked off!
