Congratulations to manager John Williams and all his players who must now try not to get over confident for their next fixture. A hat trick from James Rowlands and two goals from Jermaine Asare on his debut clinched the win. Experienced former Ton Pentre and Inter Cardiff midfielder Mark Evans is a regular squad member at League of Wales Cwmbran Town who will turn out for us in preference to a trip to Rhyl and Gavin Evans is a teenage striker who was with us as a jumior before leaving for first team football at South Wales Amateur League club Rhydyfelin Zenith (who are without a game tomorrow), where he has been scoring lots of goals. Both players are taking advantage of the FAW rule allowing players to sign for two Saturday teams, and are unlikely to be regulars. After all yesterday’s hype a terrible performance. Manager Roger Lloyd resigned after the match, stating he hasn’t got the time to do the job on a semi-professional basis after starting up his own business in the summer. Friday 13 October 2000 The rumours that have been flying around the town for the last few weeks have finally been confirmed. Pontypridd Town held a press conference(!) this afternoon to officially announce that the club is now a limited company with members able to buy shares at £1 each. A prominent local businessman, Clayton Jones of Shamrock Coaches, is behind the move and Mr. Jones is now the managing director of the club having the majority shareholding. The aim is to provide the financial backing required to get the club out of the depths of the Welsh League and in years to come compete in the League of Wales. All the players will now be paid, with non-contract players Lee Rudall (ex Hereford United youth) and Darryl Phillips (ex Cardiff City youth) signing contracts and Kevin Logan also signing a contract after leaving Crusaders FC in his native Belfast to study in the University of Glamorgan in Pontypridd. These three players are all teenagers as Ponty build for the future for a change. The 24 year old started out with Cardiff City and played a handful of games in 1995/96 for Pontypridd Town after being released by the Bluebirds. He soon moved on to Merthyr Tydfil before making an impression in the League of Wales for hometown club Aberystwyth Town, scoring 3 goals in 7 games at the end of 1996/97, 11 goals in 33 games in 1997/98, 4 goals in 28 games (12 as substitute) in 1998/99 and 7 goals in 6 games at the start of 1999/2000 before Barnsley paid around £20,000 to take him back into League football at the end of September 1999. He played only one first team game for Barnsley last season (in the Worthington League Cup) but did play 4 or 5 games for Mansfield on loan and is now on a month’s loan with Chester. Pontypridd businessman Clayton Jones of Shamrock Shoppa bus/coach company sponsored the match and invited club members as his guests for the day. Tuesday 15 August 2000 Taff’s Well 3-1 Pontypridd Town (pre-season friendly) Sunday 13 August 2000 Saturday’s scheduled opening league fixture against newly promoted Cwmtillery has finally been postponed. The game should have been at Cwmtillery but their pitch is unavailable due to cricket. We tried to switch the game to Pontypridd but also had difficulty arranging the pitch so the game has now been put back to the end of the season. Ponty hope to arrange another friendly match for Saturday. Saturday 12 August 2000 Pontypridd Town 2-0 Porto’s Grange Harlequins (pre-season friendly) Bettws FC have won an appeal lodged with the Welsh Football Association against the decision not to promote them into the Welsh League. They lost in the promotion play off to Dinas Powys but Monkton Swifts declined the offer to stay in the league and opted for voluntary relegation, leaving the league one team short. The league planned to run Division Three with only 15 clubs but the Welsh FA have over-ruled the league and now decided that Bettws should be promoted after all. Saturday 5 August 2000 Treowen Stars 1-1 Pontypridd Town (pre-season friendly) It was good to see last season’s player of the year Nicky Palmer making his mark for new club Llanelli in a friendly against Cardiff City. The 19 year old’s display was described as outstanding in a match report on “Ymlaen” (the unofficial Llanelli website) as the League of Wales side beat the professionals 2-1. Palmer left Pontypridd Town for Garden Village this summer and was snapped up by Llanelli after they played Garden Village in a friendly. He is seen as the perfect replacement for Llanelli star player Andrew Mumford who joined Swansea City.
