********************

Founded in 1982, the aim of the Nottingham Afghan Training Club is to offer assistance and advice to all Afghan owners and to promote the well-being of the Afghan Hound.

Based in the UK, our ringcraft classes take place every other Thursday at 8.00 pm at Risley Village Hall, five minutes from Junction 25 of the M1 between Nottingham and Derby.

We cater exclusively for Afghan Hounds from the age of sixteen weeks upwards. The venue has excellent indoor and outdoor facilities and although puppies are kept on a lead, we do allow them to 'play', hence they quickly learn that showing can be fun. Puppies get used to being handled, even nervous ones quickly settle down and this really does benefit them at shows.

Each year we aim to hold at least three special events, at least one being of an educational nature. Recent events have included a display of Afghan agility (most people thought it wasn't possible!), a grooming demonstration, a talk on conformation, movement, judging and handling, a handler's training day and a talk on homoeopathy and natural medicines.

Our Summer Rally and Barbecue is extremely popular and centres around a knock-out competition where it is the handlers, not the exhibits, who are judged! There are six classes, from Puppy Walk (under six months) to Veteran. Exhibits enter the ring two at a time and after going over the dogs in the usual way the judge selects one handler to go through to the next heat. The winners of each heat pair up until eventually there is an overall class winner. After all the classes have been judged, each class winner returns to the ring to compete for the title of Best Handler. The final competition, for which everyone returns to the ring, is that of the Best Presented Afghan. The afternoon is rounded off with an excellent barbecue and a social gathering where all the latest news and views may be exchanged.

Our Christmas Knock-Out includes an excellent festive buffet, the usual knock-out competition and a fun event - a sausage roll race for the dogs! Lines containing five or six sausage rolls are spaced along the floor and, once the instruction to start is given, the first to eat all their sausage rolls and return to the beginning wins the heat. The overall winner is deemed the greediest Afghan of the night!
