HISTORY OF THE UNIT

MEET THE STAFF

Unit Commanding Officer:-

Lt Ian Wilson, Joined the unit as a cadet in 1971. As well as being the units CO he is also the principal of the Units sailing school which is RYA recognised. His qualifications are: Senior Sailing Instructor, Powerboat Instructor, Senior Pulling Examiner, Advanced Seamanship Instructor and Instructional Technique Instructor. He is also a holder of the Basic Expedition leaders Award. In 1989 he was awarded the Cadet Forces Medal, 1997 he was awarded a bar to the medal and in 1998 was nominated for the Roddie Casement Sword Award. Married with one son, Ian‘s full time occupation is a Design and Technology teacher.

 

1st Lieutenant:

Lt Roderick Craighead, Joined the Unit in 1971 as a cadet but left in 1975 to join the Royal Navy as an Electrical Mechanic. After serving for four years he rejoined civilian life and the Sea Cadet Corps. He is qualified to conduct shooting and supervises the electrical engineering instruction in the unit. Awarded the Cadet Forces Medal in 1995 As the Ist Lt in the unit his job includes responsibility for ceremonial activities and discipline within the unit. His full time occupation is an electrical engineer with an oil company.

Training Officer:

Lt Ethel Wilson. Joined the unit in 1988 having previously been a cadet in Stonehaven Unit. Her qualifications are pulling instructor and holder of a Basic Expedition Leaders Award. She is tasked with looking after the training side of the unit whereby she maintains training records and teaching material for all of the Corps syllabus training. She also has an input to the expedition training for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. When not doing her Sea Cadet work, Ethel can be found fulfilling her role in the community as a District Nursing Sister.

 

Administration Officer:

Lt Margaret Bennions. Joined the unit in 1986 to start up the girls section, then known as the Girls Nautical Training Corps. Since they were fully integrated to the SCC, Margaret took on the role as Admin. Officer for the Unit. Awarded the Cadet Forces Medal in 1998, She is to be succeeded in 2000 by Miss Lindsey Buchan, a former cadet in the unit

CPO Graham Bruce: Chief Bruce is the units' main seamanship instructor and is a qualified Seamanship Examiner. He is also an engineering instructor. Because of his background he also has a district task of assessing leadership at district advancement boards. Joined the unit in 1971 as a cadet until 1983 returning in 1987 as a Chief Petty Officer. Graham is in the unique position of having a dual rank since he holds the rank of Captain in the Merchant fleet and commands a North Sea Support Vessel.

PO Paul Whitham: General Instructor in the unit with responsibility as the units' boats officer. Paul is a qualified sailing and powerboat instructor. Main area is seamanship but instructs as part of the part 1 training syllabus. A former cadet who joined in 1990, Paul is a student architect and is a keen wind-surfer.

 

PO Marlene Strachan: General Instructor in the unit but with the added responsibility as the unit PR officer owing to the fact that she works for a local radio station as a news reporter. Marlene is a former cadet who joined the unit in 1989 and is a qualified pulling instructor. Her other area of expertise is seamanship.

The unit has several civilian Instructors with varied roles and responsibilities.
