HISTORY OF THE UNIT

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN IN THE UNIT

The Unit is a Royal Yacht Association recognised teaching establishment and offers the following boat-work courses.

Water Activities include:

  • Power-boating levels 1 ,2 & Safety Boat

  • Dinghy Sailing levels 1,2 & 3
  • Junior Sailing Scheme levels 1,2 &3

  • Pulling (Rowing) all levels up to examiner level
  • Sea Training onboard TS Royalist, the Corps 100 ton sailing brig.

The Unit is currently awaiting certification to undertake wind-surfing courses.

Land Activities include:

  • Duke of Edinburgh Award
  • Parade Training
  • First Aid
  • Seamanship
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Cook/Steward
  • Shooting
  • Swimming
  • Visits to RN ships & establishments

Annually the unit runs several courses. During the Easter holidays a boat-work course is held at the unit HQ. Here cadets are accommodated and all cooking is done on the unit premises.

In the summer time the unit has a summer camp where it has a break from the normal boat-work activities. The camp is held at the Joint Services Mountain Training Centre in Kingussie, next to the Cairngorm Mountains. During the week the cadets undertake various walks, spend a couple of nights under canvas and visit a few sights around the area.
