Rhyl High School - A Brief History
Rhyl High School - A Brief History
Introduction
1996 saw the centenary of Rhyl County / Grammar / High School and these pages are a summary of the excellent publication which was produced by the school to mark the occasion.
The first school was opened on September 14th 1896 and was situated on the corner of Wellington Road and River Street. The original building still stands but is better known today as the Royal Naval Club (I can remember it being a part of the old Christ Church Primary school before they moved to today's location). The Headmaster, Mr. W.A. Lewis named the school 'Gorphwysfa' after his home in Henllan. The school opened with 57 pupils and within five years the number had risen to 91.
The pupils who attended the first term at Rhyl Intermediate School ranged in age from 9 to 15 and from a wide catchment area - Rhuddlan, Prestatyn, Gwespyr, Holywell, Dyserth and Trelawnyd (Newmarket).
