Formed in 1971 our Society is one of the oldest amateur mineral and fossil societies in the UK. The aims of the Society are to foster interest and expertise in the collecting, conservation and identification of minerals and fossils and, where possible, preserve and document the sites where they are found. We are a friendly group of people sharing a common interest in collecting, preserving and studying minerals and fossils. Find out more About SMFS and what we get up to throughout the year.

Throughout the year we hold indoor meetings, field trips and other activities (see our Meetings Programme for details). New members and guests are always welcome and we encourage families with young children to join and hold sessions for beginners. You can come along any time to one of our meetings and find out more. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at The Friends' Meeting House, Ordnance Road, Southampton starting at 19:30 to around 22:00. Every year SMFS organise the popular Hampshire Mineral & Fossil Show. This year is the 20th Show and it will be a celebration of the foremost South Coast Show of its type. It is held in the Lyndhurst Community Centre, Lyndhurst Hampshire. The Show is on Saturday 5th September 2009 from 10:00 to 16:30. For more information and directions go the the Show Page. After a long period where access to the site was not possible, as Lycos ceased hosting sites, we are now back and the site will be updated regularly.
