Re: interview Imagine the most intense, burning drones, true expressways to your skull.  Lie back, close your eyes, feel the heat.

>> >1) Who is Minmae?
>> >Essentially minmae is just me, Sean Brooks. Lately I have been working with Danny Power from the and/orS, who are a relatively new band from San Diego. I've also started working with Bill Sprague from Eye And Ear Control and Rocket Racer. There is also Megan McMichael who has just jumped on board as a keyboardist, vocalist.
>> >2)So you started making music to make money and meet girls right?
>> >I don't really know why I started. But I probably would have been too shy to talk to girls had I not gotten used to free beers at dive bars I've played.
>> >4)How do you get your guitar to sound like it's on fire?
(Bill Sprague)It is on fire!
(Sean Brooks) By running two amps together and using lots of reverb and delay. There isn't any real secret.
>> >5) Do you play live?
minmae just played for the first time about 2 weeks ago, and it went surprisingly well. Every show has to be different. I don't want there to be any correlation between the live performances and the studio. Our first show was more on The Velvet Underground tip, very stripped down. The next one will be the reverse.Built up and loud as hell, like My Bloody Valentine.
>> >6) Are you one of these people who sees the 'studio' as a 'tool'?
>> (Bill Sprague) 'to morph into our abstract creations. I would explain it to you but I would have to kill you.
(Sean Brooks)Yes, it can be a tool, but you can also be its tool if you're not headstrong. The studio has a cold and sterile ambience. I think the trick is to bring your own life experience, which is naturally present in your music, and translate it onto the studio palate, as it were. I prefer 4 tracks mixed with the aid of computers. I'm much happier juxtaposing hi-tech with low-fi. I'd rather do that than pay 50 dollars an hour to record the air conditioner that you're helping to pay for. But yes, I do feel like the studio is a tool, or even a utensil.
>> >7) What else is good round your way?
>> The Straight A's who sound a bit like Versus. There is the Moon and Sixpence, as well as Jejune. Tourette's Lautrec who are ragingly erratic in a way that makes them hard to describe. There is also the Butchwax Duo, who are a bit like John Spencer Blues Explosion. The band called Black Heart Procession are pretty good. They just released another record on Touch and Go. They are ex Three Mile Pilot members. Tristesa, Kammo, Electric Nazarene and the and/orS are also fine bands.
A new scene is finally having a chance to develop. For a long time it was Rocket From The Crypt, and everything alse was left with the scraps. But the tables are starting to turn and our standard of living has gone up.

>> >8) Name an album everyone should own
>> >Captain Beefheart Trout Mask Replica. Sonic Youth Daydream Nation. Flying Saucer Attack Chorus. Either Television album. Any Velvet Underground. Definitely Lou Reed's Transformer. Any John Lee Hooker, most Muddy Waters. Epic Soundtracks, Swell Maps. The Vaselines.Massive Attack.
>> >9) Last record bought was an Accelera Deck 7", a Green Pajamas 7", and a Live Suicide 10".
>> >10) What makes you cry?
Human Injustice. War. People that I know I've lost forever, and old friends who I have lost contact with.
(Megan McMichael)Pooh...Anything with pork.
>> I THINK THE NEXT QUESTION WAS ABOUT FOOD
I like Lebanese food, like Manakeeshes and Humus.
>> >12)What do you always carry with you?
My Driver's License, my Student ID, and a litle bag of grass.
>> >
>> >14) Your music has a kind of narcotic influence...
>> >Yes, that is what I want to do. People should be heavily engrossed in the experience. If music doesn't move you viscerally, then it is pointless. If music doesn't give a feeling of substance, whether it be narcotic or sobering, it is missing something. That isn't to say that boring music denotes boring people. There are plenty of great artists who don't know how to get there point across. I'm one of them. Lately I've been trying to envision other people's rooms. Wondering what the music listening experience is like for them. I want to know what that
characteristic is that makes a record jump out at you and pull you in. I've been trying to find that characteristic ad nauseum. That is probably why minmae has a narcotic influence. I would rather see someone passed out in the corner while we are playing than have them feel ambivalence.
>> >15) What are you up to at the moment?
>> >I'm busy with my label AirborneVirus. Bill is busy with Rocket Racer. I am also a student at City College in lovely downtown San Diego.
>> >16) You think you'll ever make a pop record?
>> >(Bill Sprague) When the kids get older, they are going
>> to want to know the truth about their dad. What can
>> I say? You can't just say "Kids, I'm a spy!"
>> (Sean Brooks) You'll have to excuse Bill, he's had a long day.
Rocket Racer is doing a co-release with Airborne Virus. We are
releasing a split LP with Electroscope. The Electroscope side is
actually narcotic. It sounds wonderful. The minmae side is my first attempt at making a pop record. I'm not sure about the results. I personally like it, but I'm curious to see what happens with it. It is very lo-fi, and all the songs are pop.
>> >17) What's the worst thing you've ever done(personally, not musically)?
>> (Megan McMichael) I told my sister to have a labotomy. And she did.
>> (Billy Sprague) A goat.
(Sean Brooks) When I was eight I was playing in the back yard with the neighborhood kids, and I accidently dropped a drill on this kid's leg. I also tried to pee in a cooler and tried to sell it go girls as lemonade. I don't know why.
