We have decided not to feature any stories from November.
With Christmas fast approaching Stacey would like to say a few words instead on behalf of her animal friends.
Children love animals and an appropriate pet makes a wonderful gift. Unfortunately the appropriate animal is not always obvious! Pets require looking after and some expense.
As much as we would love to care for our pets and have good intentions most of us will quickly become lazy in our jobs of feeding, grooming, exercising or other chores that go with the pet. Pets are there just for that PETTING. This means that you grown ups are going to have to do most of the work!! Or the new pet will just be a new source for shouting and arguements. So if you don't want the extra jobs for yourself don't buy one.
Of course we're going to make lots of promises, whine and protest and try to make your lives hell until you give in, that's what we are there for and do best. But you are the parents and so the final decision and responsibility is YOURS!
Okay so I haven't put you off and you're still thinking of getting a pet, so what type?
Puppies are a very popular choice. And often the wrong one is chosen! Puppies are going to disrupt and wreck your home. They are a long term commitment costing lots of money, need plenty of exercising and are going to grow - and some of them are going to really grow! They are also the most popular choice for dumping after Christmas!!
Kittens are really cute and us kids just love them. and love them and love them. In return they are going to ruin your furniture and curtains, scratch and attack us. When they get older they will spray all over the house and if female will probably have loads of kittens that you are going to have to find homes for.
Exotic pets have recently become popular. However many of them require very specific conditions and food to be healthy. For some temperature can be an important factor. So if you have no or little experience with these types of animals it really makes sense to get one in winter when the temperature can vary a great deal, but mainly cold, and maintaining the required temperature can be difficult. NOT! Exotic animals can be very difficult to rehome as there are not so many people who have the proper experience to look after them as they should be.
It should also be remembered that there is no point in buying a dangerous pet that bites or squeezes it's victims and then protest when they do it to your kids! Remember YOU are responsible for what you introduce into your home and the dangers you expose your children to.
So if you're not sure about the needs of your chosen pet and know that you will be able to meet your commitments to them, DON'T get it for Christmas. If you know all about your new pet then have a happy life together.
Let's make this a quiet Christmas for the animal rescue centers.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
