Syzygium jambos (L.)
Alston (Myrtaceae) is a medium size tree bearing edible fruits.
It has been introduced to most of the tropics and was
planted on Pitcairn Island as a fuel wood resource. This species is
a poor disperser but regenerates profusely and
does readily spread in the vicinity of mature
trees to eventually form monotypic stands. Both seedlings and
saplings are highly shade tolerant and mature individuals cast
a heavy shade.
