London, Britain has accomodation ranging from 5 Star to Bed and Breakfast Guest Houses to Youth Hostels. Staying in the city centre is great if you want to do some shopping and seeing the sites. London Travel is easy due to the Underground - the Tube.
I recommend you stay near Hyde Park. If neccessary you can walk into the centre. It is about 45 mintes.
You don't have to stay in the city centre. For example, you can stay outside London and take a train in.

Tip:
When you are in London, buy a day Travel Card from a tube station. You can also
get weekly cards. A great way to save money.
To
get to the centre, take the tube to either Leicester Square, Picadilly Circus,
Oxford Circus or Totenham Road.
Things to see:
- I recommend London Eye,
London Zoo, and definetely check out the markets like Greenwich Market,
Camden Market and Portabello Market.
- Most of the Major Shops are
on Oxford Street. If your interested in buying books, there are many on
Charring Cross Road (Totenham Tube Stop).
- China Town (Leicester Square Tube) is a good place for eating near the centre or the Soho Area. Also Brick Lane near Liverpool Street Train/Tube Station.
