There are many castles in Dublin and Dublin County. The most famous castle is Dublin Castle which is located in the city centre. These include:

Dublin Castle, Dame Street

Dublin Castle was originally built 1204-28 as part of Dublin's defensive system. The Record or Wardrobe Tower is the principal remnant of the 13th Century Anglo-Norman fortress and has walls 16 foot thick.

The 15th century Bermingham Tower was once the state prison where Red Hughes O'Donnell was interned in the 16th Century. Of interest are the State Apartments, dating from the British Administration; these were once the residence of English Viceroys.

Ardgillan Castle, County Dublin

Although referred to as a Castle, the residence at Ardgillan is a large country-style house with castellated embellishments. Originally named "Prospect", the central section was built in 1738 by Robert Taylor, with the west and east wings added in the late 1700's. The house consists of two storeys over a basement which extends out under the lawns on the southern side of the building. Ardgillan was opened to the public as a Regional Park in June 1985.

Drimnagh Castle, Drimnagh

Drimnagh Castle consists of a Great Hall and a medieval undercroft, a tall battlement tower with lookout posts and other separate building and is the only Irish castle still to be surrounded by a flooded moat. It is located on the Long Mile Road, Drimnagh, Dublin 12.
